Maybe the game is using your VR mic instead of your PC mic(or vice versa).
The possible case for you is that your friends hear you from a DIFFERENT microphone.
I advice you to DISABLE all the microphones(through Windows. Not just press a button on the mic itself, or unplug. Disable the input device itself, through Windows) except the one you're about to use. If your friends start hearing you well, or stop hearing you completely, that will prove my suggestion.
The only 2 mic-related changes the game can do, is choosing the mic to listen to, and the total volume of it. There is an another way to change the output - other players can control the volume of your microphone. Maybe you've changed your mic, and it is not as loud as your previous mic, but your friends forgot that they've reduced your voice input?
