1. the ghost must be actually in a 3 meter range of the person calling out the question (the position of the spirit box does not matter, it must be only activated and in hearing range)
2. some ghosts only answer to single persons in the room, some will answer also to groups
3. some ghosts only answer if the room is not lit
So the best chances to get an answer is to let others leave the room and switch off the room lights (candles or flashlight doesn't matter). You may throw the spirit box on the floor and wander around in bigger rooms while asking several questions to the ghost to. Do it especially near the spot the ghost is most times active or did recently a ghost activity to increase the chances to be in its 3 meter range and the ghost is in the room actually (if he is currently wandering through the house, you won't get any answer).
Fun fact: ghosts also answer during hunts ;)
Mr. Obvious stating the obvious :D
It has no meaning towards the trait of the ghost. If it were, there would be huge contradictions towards certain ghost types. For example, Onis are active as a group wouldn't make sense for it to respond to people who are alone. Same for shade being a shy ghost and responding to everyone.
This is not right. I had a lot of ghosts which also answered when the lights were on in the room. It is advisable to turn them off and not rely on this, but some ghost don't bother the room being lit.
I know that mares specifically won't do much if the lights are on, but it might be different in the case of other ghosts.
Yes, this is what I mean. Happens to me quite often because I am blabbering with the ghost a lot, regardless of the light.
Regardless of it being a bug or a glitch. But sometimes it just works that the room lights are on and the box will answer anyway. Though it never works with a Mare. this is why I believe it may not be a bug.
Would be cool if someone can take a look into the code if this is intended or not.
Even the journal still states that the Phantom can possess a player. But it cannot right now. So what is your point now? The game is EA and is changing every day. We don't know what DKnigher really changed. Some minor things he changed I never found in his changelogs.
But I will check it next time if it happens again, and will also take a look if a "dark area" in the room will count as well. I highely doubt it, doesn't fit to my experiences so far when it happened. And as far as I noticed it doesn't matter to the sanity drop as well if you are standing in dark areas of a lit room (for example damaged lamps in corridors in Asylum and such). I will note down the ghost type also. might be interesting if this is tight to some few ghosts only (like the Demon being less active than the room is lit).
For the time being, maybe it is an urban legend that ghosts only answer in dark rooms? Like some people still thinking that taking a picture of a dead body will have an influence on the insurance.
No need for it. Intended or not, the video you posted is already demonstrating that it can happen that you get an answer in a lit room. This is sufficient and it matches my experiences that I had a couple of times. So I was right that a ghost may answer you in a lit room (though the chances are way bigger to switch off the room lights). If it is true that it is more connected to dark area than the light switches, the tutorial is wrong, as I already asumed.
Thank you for finding this video and sharing it with us.
I will check it out next time it happens. It seems that a lot more places have this bug then, as I was not speaking about Edgefield specifically. It happened on other maps too.
