talked in the spirit box for like 10 minutes and the ghost didn't respond so I ruled all ghosts off with spirit box but then I find out it's a yokai? How does spirit box even work

Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Check the whiteboard, it should tell you if the ghost responds to groups or people alone. Go in preferably alone either way, and you must be inside of the ghost room for it to work, as well as with the lights turned off. Ghost box requires a little spike in activity, so you'll have to wait for the ghost to actually be around and be in the mood to talk. After all that's been done, it should speak.

Like BlobMan32 already said, the basic rules are easy, though there are a lot of minor funny behaviours:

* ghost must be a spirit box ghost
* you must have said a key sentence the ghost will react to ("give me a sign", "where are you", just two examples)
* spirit box must be on
* lights of the room you are in must be off (ghost may be still in a lit room)
* the spirit box must be in a 3 meter range to the ghost (does work through walls)
* you must be within 3 meters of that spirit box (does also work through walls)
* there is just a 33% chance the ghost might answer
* some ghosts also only answer to people that are alone in the room (ask your team to get out of your room)

Fun fact 1: the spirit box can work as a relais station on the floor, so you basically can be 6 meter away from the ghost at most and still get an answer. Testet it out in Bleasdale over two rooms

Fun fact 2: ghosts also do answer during hunts (not recommended though)

Fun fact 3: saying the forname of the ghost before a question will negate a spirit box answer as it counts as saying the name only (which will most likely trigger just an activity, not the box). So never say, "Sandra, are you here?" if you want a box answer. Saying "Are you here, Sandra?" is fine.

The easiest way is to be alone with the ghost in the room in the dark (flashlight and candle may be on). Ask the ghost if he is here, if you get a sign, go where the sign occured while asking (knocking on a window, pushed item, door movement, phone ringing, for example). Ask a couple of times around that spot, not that holding the spirit box must be in a 3 meter range to the ghost. You should get the answer in no time of you do that.

I learnt this the other day! It should always say something after you talk like "nothing found" on the Spirit Box screen!

This is true. If the box does not show "nothing detected" after 2 seconds you said a key sentence, voice recognition does no work (temporarily). if you multitask, you should always klick on the Phasmo icon in the taskbar to return to the game. A well known problem that is even on the Trello roadmap for future fixes.

Voice recognition isn't perfect but you can try checking your audio in-game settings.

Also you gotta be in ghost's room to get a response.
