Does Phasmophobia have a future with Unity engine?
First of all, I have very little clue about engines, however, my programmer friend told me, only the worst games are made by Unity, and I've seen a few examples. This game has a lot of potential, and I believe we can get a smooth, bug-free game by the end of it's development. But is it possible?

Name one truly bug-free game.

I am too lazy to prove a point, you can find among the list that there are games that are not
the 'worst'.

I know, there are no games without bugs... But you know what I mean, if you play the game.

By the way, don't get me wrong! Im in cloud 9 with the game, love it.

It's not the engine that's trash, it's always the ones who are using it.

I am not exactly defending this game (you are free to hate it), just maybe have more realistic expectations? I am guessing you want the dev to switch to unreal 4 (or maybe 5 in late 2021)? That's not for me to decide, and it is alot of work to switch to a new engine. Difference in syntax, compatability, modules and the likes.

If you also read about the features of unreal 5, you might too come to conclusion that it might just be an overkill for phasmophobia. Hyper-realistic environment is great and all, but is the dev actually going for that?

Author said that he doesn't have much experience with programming or even devving stuff. So that is exactly the kind of engine he needs. So I think the "buglessness" and smoothness of the game is simply no in the dev's priority list.

You are always free to make your own games on engines you find more "proper", but the thing is.. It is not always that the person who knows the engine is also the person who have a nice idea worth to be designed :D

I mean, it's still Early Access-
Changing the current engine to a different one is like redoing half of the game from scratch. That is too much time for something that doesn't deserve.
He'll just make Phasmophobia 2, I guess.

your friend has no clue what they're talking about

Unity is widely considered as a good entry point to game developement, thus having many newer devs use the engine.
The Quality of games stems mostly from the devs here, Unity is a good tool if used correctly.

So, yes the game can thrive on Unity if the Dev is committed enough.

idk who told you that but Unity is quite a good engine..

You need to lpay games like Subnautica, Ori, Beat Saber to realise that thou... XD

For your friend to say that Unity is a bad engine is like me saying the only good coding language is the Assembly language of the MOS 6502.

Maybe he/she/it don't like Unity but that don't make it a bad engine or a bad game
Grouchy Jan 12, 2021 @ 4:10am
There is definitely a history to Unity that make people think that and in part it is with good reason.

Steam has many Unity-based games that are made with the intention to rip off people and with Unity assets so easy to buy and programming languages such as C# and Iron python, It makes sense as to why it is so easy for ANYONE to take part in making a game with Unity, whether it be someone new to the engine, a veteran or a scammer,

So your friend is as correct as they are wrong, Unity can be used to make as great games as it can make terrible games.

Even I learn AR using Unity. I study math education so AR is gonna be very useful and Unity is my start point to learn programming AR (because my lecturer and tutor learns using unity).

All these are true and until the future at least, NO games will be without bugs. As for Unity, tbh i dont understand the hate for it either. Some say, "Move to Unreal Engine its better!". For a game thats not highly graphically driven and on lower profit margins, Unity takes a lower "cut" of profits compared to Unreal, which id say is slightly more graphically superior, but takes a larger cut. Which again is reasons why newer developers chose Unity, just being slightly overall easier to use and cheaper (unless pricing changed since i last looked).

Ive seen dev teams admit, "We just get to that point after thousands of hours of coding and testing, theres always those bugs you just cannot find out the cause and unless it breaks the game, you leave it and move on. We try to minimise them, but we also have to push out unfinished products which may be up to 3 months out of date, because the release version has to be ready on time for burning to DVD, uploading to servers for download, etc on day 1. We cannot hold up all the logistics for delivery to countries to release all on the same day, time for shops to put on shelves, etc, just to push the current release we are still working on. It will be pushed into a patch shortly after release".

Which i actually think is a fair and honest statement. As long as companies continue to push updates, its all good to me and most others, unless something completely breaks lol.

It's cheap. If they make a lot of money maybe they can licence the Unreal or Source engine or something else higher end for the sequel.
