Yurei = Japanese
Oni = Obviously japanese but more of a demon I think right?
Banshee = Irish
Revenant = English/French/Irish/Celtic
Poltergeist = German
I think all the other ones are European ghosts the cross into different languages and cultures such as Wraiths and "Spirits". Their names are wide spread and their characteristics and styles have changed over time with different stories and now games and movies.
The game ( I think) gets a lot of inspiration from modern Japanese Ghost movies. The Japanese are nailing it in the ghost department right now and haven't forgotten that ghosts are supposed to be spooky not monstrous.
The game gets a lot of inspiration from paranormal activity in how ghosts react to the presence of the living, but also follows the english and probably generally speaking the european tradition that ghosts inhabit an area for some psychological reason and will let you know you're in their house or just generally complain about how tough it was being alive.
So within the scope of this game the ghosts have to be more similar than unique and therefore no cellphone/TV portal attacks, or bathroom mirror summoning, or getting beaten up by your classmates while blind folded, no wells, etc.
For example a Revenant is supposed to be an animated corpse that goes "no way I am taking this crap!" And so the corpse wakes back up and gets revenge on the murderer(s) and then goes back to being 100% dead after that, but that doesn't workout in this game since it doesn't even know you and also an animated corpse is pretty easy to spot. I thought they were originally French but apparently it comes from a french word but we're talking pre-France origins and so it pops in in English/Irish/French and other cultures as well.
I guess a lot of ghosts are highly situational.
It would be good to get some more names from around the world and maybe adapt the ghosts to encompass some of the traits associated with the style of those ghosts. This is the 21st century afterall. But also ghosts are highly emotional and sort of intimate spooky stories so it might be hard to do them justice
1. Currently, no models are attatched to any ghost, it's random, So no Grunge/The Ring ghosts specific to a ghost type. If you were to ADD Japanese inspired horror/ghost models they wouldn't be attatched to the ghost types.
2. Adding more ghosts would fill up every combination - which isn't a problem currently, but when half of the detection tools can give you the answer it will make it less fun.
(E.g there are 6 ways to identify a ghost and only 3 things to identify it, 12 current ghosts out of a possible total of 15)
3. You need create abilities that aren't what would be called a 'Major Tell'. It's ability needs to influence ghost behaviour but not to the extent to give itself away.
I'm all for more ghosts, but I think there should be more detection methods first to make the hunting element more relevant.
Bring in the eastern european type ghosts, evil spirits and boogie men. That will be more fun. :>
