They can't hear you during a hunt.
This has been proven time and time again.
Testing, dev comments, and looking at the code proves this.
The only things the ghost goes by during a hunt is there regular pathing and the ray-trace beam from their head.
What I don‘t get then is why I got killed so many times when I was talking and didn‘t get killed when I was.
The ghost literally went into all rooms when I was talking and he doesn‘t randomly do this right?
Really? Wow... I'm a bit disappointed.
I remember once in the school map, I was dead and following the ghost during a hunt, and I saw how the ghost abruptly changed its trajectory when one of them screamed, the ghost went straight towards them, as if it had seen them from the corridor, backing toward a door that it had already passed, going faster than it was moving up to now... he got into the classroom where they were, and went directly to the corner where the three of them were hiding, killing one of them (I don't know if he's the one who screamed or not)... ghost just turned suddenly when they screamed, that's why I thought that ghosts can definitely hear us.
Well... Just in case... I'm going to be quiet during hunts. Although its true that there are people who do not shut up, and even shout during a hunt, and nothing happens to them.
So I guess every time that has happened to me, or what the OP has experienced, it has been a matter of chance.
watch chilledchaos' phasmaphobia streams, particularly sessions joined by toastfps.
you'll see chilled annoys the ghost by not shutting up outside hunts, but in some cases, particularly when you watch a related stream (like zeroyalviking), you'll see the ghost beeline for chilled whenever there is significant noise during a hunt.
it'll almost always choose chilled over anyone else.
if you read the decompiled logic github thing, they note they can find no evidence that ghosts CAN hear during hunts, but there is also no reason that the code for OUTSIDE hunts stops. so it's quite conceivable the code continues regardless.
my guess here is chilled gains the ghost's attention, it hunts. and the noise code triggers and provides "hints" towards the target of it's anger.
regardless of source of irritation...
so when people talk/sing, it's getting a hint towards it's target. and will partially aggro on them. hence why it can find chilled in a cupboard beside another, and will almost ALWAYS kill chilled.
in chilled's case, it's largely deserved. respect the ghost.
but my guess is the code is for whoever the ghost has attention for. even if they were never misbehaving at all.
so potentially, a troll could get the entire team killed by sheer luck of the ghost not choosing them as the target...
personally, i'm unsure, but the evidence is either the game was bugging out over multiple sessions with multiple people, over different builds to kill chilled consistently..
or there was a common factor in play.
until i see concrete evidence that it can't, and considering such evidence needs to take different windows builds, different microphones, ambient noise levels, and soundcard combinations into account. i don't think said evidence will actually convincingly emerge.
and keeping it consistent between sessions? good luck.
till then, i'm just going to play it safe, and assume that it very well can hear... and i'd advise everyone to either find out for sure, or play it safe.
Just go into the game and give it a try, or even multiple tries. The ghost doesnt use sounds to track you down
Actually, ghosts always were able to randomly enter rooms.
During hunts ghosts get waypoint that they go to if they aren't chasing anyone. They can get a waypoint just before a door, inside a door (this most of the time resorts to you hearing groaning and heartbeat but the ghost walks away), they can get a waypoint inside a room. If they get a waypoint inside a room they will enter that room and if they see you they will chase you.

Also, Psycho routinely tests these things and provides ample evidence to support it. If you get unlucky enough to be grabbed during a hunt while talking, it's purely coincidence. Keep in mind, this is likely to change in the future.

I also however have been talking before with 4 players and heart the heartbeat sound and had the ghost come near me after i did so maybe its somthingto do with the number of players (or the difficulty) The one where i heard the heartbeat was professional with 4 people and on a large map. Todays test was 2 people on just one of the normal houses on professional as well.
So I believe atleast that with 2 people on one of the small regular house maps you can chat all you want, it might bring the ghost closer to where your hiding but never in to kill you as long as the door is closed and there isnt a way for them to see you.
Also very interestingly they seem to only be able tosee infront of them, had the ghost start hunting in the room i was in facing away from me, and just walked out of the room and started wandering.
Anyways given different perameters maybe its different but im too lazy to test, and the ghost might come *closer* if you talk but i didnt bother testing that more cuz it would be difficult to test and doesnt really matter either your hidden or your not
I hope so. That would be really good.
