Again they have to know what they are doing. It takes longer if they want to "stick together" which is what I find most players doing. If you spread out with a thermo on each person, you'll find the room in under a min.
I think this hits almost everything about playing solo. Biggest thing I want to add is that if you play solo, the time it takes to find the ghost room (Task #1 in every match) is increased significantly because only one person can search instead of 4. Bring a Thermometer, since it's currently the only reliable way to find the ghost room. Look for below 50F and you've got it. Transporting your gear to that room after you've found it is also more of a time sink because of only one person doing it.
Solo, you spend a lot more of your time hiding during a hunt (lights start blinking rapidly). As your sanity drops after spending some time in the dark, you spend more time hiding from hunts than searching for the Ghost Room. Solo, this can be terrifying but slow progress on the medium and large maps. Even the High School can feel like a slog after 15 minutes of not finding the correct room.
Sanity pills are surprisingly good at prolonging the exploration part of the game, so bringing your max of those is even more important for solo play. You can check your sanity at the van anytime, and down them to regain 40%. This is crucial to keep hunts at bay and keep the search or gathering phases going without risk or delay.
If you don't mind playing on the small maps, or having a tense but long game on the medium and larger ones, then solo is perfect. It's definitely not bad, and I think most fans of horror games that don't just throw you on rails until the next level would find it a satisfying process.
With multiple people, you're usually not too worried about finding the Room because even if you die, 3 others can find it and then gather evidence. The worst that happens is you get half pay on Professional difficulty and still come out close to meeting what you spent on items.
My personal favorite for this game is 2 people for small and medium, and 3 for medium and large maps. And yeah, medium maps have overlap because of their weird spot right now. For me and my friends, these sizes hit the sweet spot of horror and tactics without losing too much because of the chaotic social nature of 4 people.
However, 1 person can still have unexpectedly good fun in this game on any map and any difficulty. It just might be more horror and less success on higher difficulties and large maps. You might find the room and gather part of the evidence and then make a guess about the ghost type and flee before a hunt starts. Definitely not a bad way to play a horror game.
Overall, great game solo and with small teams. Far better than I was expecting before I tried it for ~20 hours. Don't expect an unforgiving solo experience like GTFO. Just expect some limitations on what you can accomplish as one person and be prepared to compensate.
