How to use the crucifix/cross?

What is the correct way to use it so that the ghost cannot kill you?
We tried leaving it in a room and it doesn't work and sometimes it has killed us with the item in hand, how does it work?

Every time I used it I had it thrown on the floor and was standing on top of it when the hunt would start and that would seem to work.

The general community consensus is that you need to have the Crucifix on the floor for it to actually work. The Crucifix emits a circle with a radius of 3m, so the ghost has to actually spawn on top of it for it to cancel the hunt. Some ghosts don't actually spawn in their hot spot, especially if it's a roaming ghost.

Definitely have to drop the item. It has a radius (as mentioned, generally agreed upon as about 10 feet or so). If the ghost would spawn around it, the crucifix prevents the spawning. This can happen twice per crucifix, at which point the crucifix will disappear. Most ghosts will spawn around their hot spot, but some will spawn in a different location. Wherever it spawns, it seems to spawn in that location repeatedly (if not always), so if the ghost always walks down the stairs when a hunt starts, you know it spawns up stairs for example.

The crucifix has to be thrown on the ground, and it will create a radius of three meters (9.84 ft) that is capable of stopping the ghost from entering its hunting phase two times. The ghost MUST be in this radius in order for it to work.

The exception to the three meters is if the ghost is a Banshee, in which case the radius is five meters (16.40 ft). The same rules apply as above.

It cancels the ghost's hunt if it tries to begin it within 3 metres of the crucifix. If the ghost is further than 3m, the crucifix will not stop the hunt and will not save you. In my second game I died because I thought I was safe standing on top of a crucifix in a bedroom, but the ghost started its hunt from the hallway, entered the room and killed me. So in my last game where I got stuck taunting a ghost alone in a bathroom to try for a picture, I put a crucifix out in the hallway too.

Also you won't be notified that a hunt has been stopped at all, so keep an eye on the crucifixes because they have only two uses before they silently disappear leaving you with no protection at all and you might not even know it.
