Since it has been metioned incorrectly in here a few times Smudge Sticks do not anger the ghost, in fact successfully smudging the ghost prevent it from hunting for some time. So if anything it makes it less aggressive.

I"m not sure how the AI works in this game. I will say I've said some stuff that was low key uncool (asking a Hispanic named ghost where his greencard is as an example) and it's triggered reactions. I will say do ask the team permission to go that direction before going there. The last thing I ever want to do is upset someone by using actual trigger sayings.

Smudge sticks prevent hunts but also increases ghost activity. So they are actually a safe way to provoke the ghost into acting without making it hunt. Also, since they increase ghost activity they often do trigger hunts if you smudge the wrong area(or just miss the ghost).

For sure when I've challenged it with "Show yourself" I've had it manifest literally once in maybe 200 runs or so. Also repeating its name over and over only provoked an appearance once. It will- seemingly in concert with my taunts- flicker the lights, move a door, etc., but won't bloody show up unless it's just one of those ghosts that benefits from it... in which case it will show up often just to drop your sanity...

This is what makes it a bit meh. Apparently swearing does work. When I do it, it does seem to have an effect. I'm not against swearing at all and do so regularly, but I just don't enjoy walking in and swearing at my PC- feels stupid. Not even immersive because I don't exactly hate the ghost where I want to call it an M-F. Just want my friggin ghost photo!

The triggers for activity also includes smudging-sticking it and getting it to walk through salt (at least for wraiths). Also getting your sanity very low makes it more active, but... heh
