It's called atmosphere. Just turn the volume down if it bothers you that much.

Is there a way to specificly disable Atmosphere tho? cuz it annoys me very much
Missiletoad Nov 29, 2020 @ 6:38am
no, there is no way to disable that, it makes half the atmosphere in the game, would be pointless without it
if you don't like it you have 2 options, lower the volume or get used to it.

Hi,

Its a psychological part, this sound affects our nervous system and its used in horror movies, ghost trains etc. to give a creepy feeling.

Set the volume on 75-80 and it should be fine. (Its never ment to be at full volume)

Agreed I hate that noise. Wouldn't mind it if it was lower. If it could be lowered separately from the rest of the audio it would be cool.

removing a vital part of a game like ambient sounds will ruin the games feel
Phantom Liberty Nov 29, 2020 @ 10:36am
There really should be a way to disable it. Hopefully it's temporary and actual ambiance is being worked on. It's a cheap effect so you don't have to hear the total lack of ambient sounds. It's essentially brown noise as it is now.

Doesn't make anything creepy at all tbh, it just annoys my ears

You may not think it's affecting you mentally but trust me it is. Keep your volume to be just loud enough to hear other players the ghost box etc and it will be a white nose affect.

Man people are whiny...

I hope they update it where you can turn down or off the ambience separately, it gives my friend a headache after playing it for like half an hour and it sucks bc otherwise we really have fun playing it.

I'd like it to be turned down a *little* bit. I like all the other sounds at full volume just fine. The overall BWWWOOOOO atmosphere is a biiiiit intense tho.

Tanglewood noise should be downed, period, it is not immersive it's annoying and damaging to atmosphere. It effects you no more than your neighbor fixing his ceiling

If it so loud it hurts your ears TURN THE VOLUME DOWN.

It is faint enough it shouldn't bother you. If you have to increase the game volume to hear other players - tell those players that their mic is a piece of a semi-working ♥♥♥♥ they should replace/turn the sound boost on.

That sound is here because it serves 2 things:
1. It prevents you from increasing volume too loud so your ears won't be blown out by a sudden sound of a ghost event. It is "your maximum volume" rule you should obey.
2. Removing that sound will make it too easy to spot ghost activity. It was made to cover other sounds and mislead you into thinking something is going on when it doesn't.

My suggestions are:
1. Your volume is too loud.
2. You might have a normalizer turned on. It might make it unbearably loud. Any kind of driver-level sound application can do normalization, so try and remember if anything of that kind was installed previously/comes with your system.
3. You're giving it too much attention, thus creating ill psychological focus that prevents you from getting over it. Give it some time, and try to get used to it, and also reduce your volume. I can hear the ghost just fine, at any part of the building(aside bigger maps), even with that atmosphere sound effect loop going over. It isn't bothering to me at all.

I mean, phasmophobia isn't really scary. With without that sound phasmophobia would be on par with Tetris in terms of "scary"
