How does Banshee targetting exactly work?
im kinda confused of how it works,
we went on a pro roadhouse last night with my 2 other friends and one had to afk for some reason so me and my other friend entered the house and was roaming around and when we found the room we got freezing temp and emf 5 , so it left us with wether banshee or phantom but the ghost was super neutral and his activity was almost 0 most of the times,and we were in there for literaly 15 mins and no hunt, we tried to catch ghost orbs but nothing , and also no fingerprints it wouldnt even walk in the room , the motion sensors showed nothing , we called the name multiple times and still nothing , so we went back to truck and wait for my afk friend to come back and told him to go slightly past door and as soon as he did activity jumped from 0 to 10 and it started hunting.
and of course it was a banshee at the end.

I read on the wiki that banshee changes target if the current target is not in building.
and also my friend didnt even move out of the truck and yet he was the target.
So is this kinda a bug or is it supposed to work like this?

Which map was that? Maybe it is a map-related issue?

From what I can tell Banshees work that way and change targets only on death or possible DC (I have not tested DCing). They tend to be kind of passive if their target is not in the building.

It kind of confuses me as well. Multiple times we've had a banshee follow around one specific person and screw with them the whole time, but then go after someone completely different when they start hunting, so I dunno.

banshees seem to change targets if the original target hasnt entered for 30 seconds so that you cant just have them afk and delay a hunt forever.

I did not know that, I guess I am just lucky playing with friends after we ID its target. Do you happen to have a link to a video of a banshee hunting another target after the confirmed target is afk in the van and did not just walk out the door as the hunt started?

Personally, I just assumed the change a little over a month ago was to stop them from bugging out if their target walked out of the house as they started to hunt.

Assuming the post in my reply is not correct, there is 2 important things to keep in mind that might be causing confusion.

First, banshees do have a preferred kill target, they have a special ability that means they will try to stalk and kill that specific target if they are in the building, as well as hunt normally if sanity conditions are met, where they will again, prefer to target that specific person.

Second, ghosts do have rules on how they pick new targets during hunts, which many of those rules when the game launched were absent for banshees so they could not pick new targets, which caused a problem if their new preferred target happened to leave the building as the hunt was starting.

I assume that the line you are referring to concerns how ghosts change targets during hunts and not the banshees preferred kill target, but like any game with a lot of misinformation I could be wrong, but from my experience this is the way banshees work.

From my understanding Banshee picks one person. Had that happen one game. One guy was scared to leave the truck. The Banshee didn’t hunt at all. We told him to set foot in the house and sure enough it started hunting. Was quite funny.
From my experiences:

A Banshee picks a target from the group of players from the start and WILL NOT change targets unless it kills that player or they disconnect. A Banshee will be mostly docile/passive if its target is outside, even if collective sanity is below the hunting threshold. (I've only seen it interact, no appearances or hunts)

When exactly a Banshee can start a hunt is still a bit of a mystery to me though. I have had instances where a Banshee seems to ignore the sanity threshold that the other ghosts are bound to, for example:

We entered a Ridgeview Roadhouse with 4 players on Professional, all players still at 100% sanity, yet it started a hunt within the first 15 seconds of the game. One of us got killed, so we all immediately went out to check on our sanity, which had only dropped to 95%.

A Banshee also seems to be the only ghost that can start a hunt from a different room than the ghost's room. When this happens it seems that the Banshee spawns in the room where its target is. Figuring out who the target is and having them hide pre-amptively is not a viable strategy, even if the hiding spot is on the opposite side fo the map.

During a Banshee hunt, a Banshee will ignore other players in favor of its target. I have on multiple occasions moved THROUGH the ghost during a hunt, only for it to ignore me and go after one of my fellow hunters.

Crucifixes affect a Banshee more than just having a larger radius to prevent a hunt: if the Banshee is within the active range of a crucifix, it will be less active overall. Banshee also do not seem to wander away from their room if their target isn't inside the house.

Regarding hunting behavior, I've read from various sources that the banshee has a sort of secret ability where every once in a while it will teleport to an area near its target, start stalking them for 20 seconds, and after that time if the target is out of its sight it will initiate a hunt trying to find them. We've actually successfully managed to lure a banshee into a hunt once or twice by having the suspected target hide in a closet for a couple minutes. (Doesn't always work, though, since it seems to use this ability at random, so there's no way to know how long it will be before it decides to use it next) Unfortunately it also seems to be able to ignore the grace period at the start of amateur and intermediate missions using this ability.
