computer shutting down during play
so i have a friend who has been having issues where his pc will randomly shut off when playing this game. i play with him on a lot of other games but for some reason this one causes it to shut off. we checked temps and nothing is overheating that we can see. so i told him maybe his PSU is dying. so he picked up a new on and installed it. the same thing is still happening. so i was thinking maybe its his board? why would this game be the only thing causing him issues? all his drivers are up to date.

Edit: also had him do a windows file integrity scan on command prompt. nothing came back with errors.

Tell your friend to manually switch to DirectX 10 by doing the following:

Copy paste this into the launch options of the game:

-force-feature-level-10-1

  • Right click on the game in the library > properties > launch option > paste it.

It's most likely a compatibility problem, it should get a fix in future patches within optimization regarding that.

Possibly a motherboard dying? The only reasons I can think of a computer shutting itself down without warning so the motherboard hitting some critical threshold and powering itself off to save itself.

There's many problems if it is hardware side like Ram, CPU, GPU, Slots on MoBo, and short circuited battery on MoBo so that's a long maintenance to check all of it.

I just went through this. new PSU, new mobo. Download CrystalDiscInfo and run it. Turns out it was my boot drive going bad. I re-installed windows on another drive and booted it from that and problem solved, 250 dollars spent that was not needed. So start with the drive, its the cheapest :)

Make sure to turn off all overclocks including any XMP profiles. Clear CMOS on the motherboard. Check all the wires, make sure nothing is loose or being pinched.

Does it shut down or does it reboot? In any case Windows should log it as a critical error. You can look this up but right now I can't remmeber where to find it (shouldn't be to hard to find out)

In case of a shutdown I would check PSU and temperatures. As far as I understand PSU is ruled out and temperature didn't show bad readings. Nontheless I would try to keep a side panel open. Maybe the CPU boosts too agressively. It it not very possible but usually an open side-panel test can help to rule this out either.

In case of a reboot I would go for RAM. You can diagnose it with Windows-tools but it isn't guranteed, that this will detect an error. So if there isn't a general system instability the only thing I would ceck , as mentioned in another posting, is the XMP-profile.

when this happens it happens sometimes due to a motherboard safety feature kicking in when its drawing too much power

so maybe tell him to turn down his overclock a bit

Hardware or driver related crash. Nothing else.
The most probable issue: overheat(old hardware with a caked up thermocompound, possibly?).

Turn on VSync. Or limit FPS at 30/60

I've seen several threads on the matter. In many other games, too. That issue is like 99.9% caused by hardware/drivers/OS.

Many strange things may happen too, though. I had a video card, which drivers would fail, because of a Phong shader used in some games. It would work for about a hour, and then the game would just display black screen.

I was unlucky to have both a faulty RAM stick and a video card with such defect that was only active in the only game I was playing the most. Needless to say it was a mess of BSODs and driver crashes.
