I quit games when they force me to lower the volume too much. It's not scary, it's just annoying. My opinion on that kind of topic.
Ghost starting to sing/hum a song while looking for you, could also be an option to increase tension. Or faking going away slowly in one direction and then stomp running in the opposite one for a second or two would also be interesting.
But honestly: just wait for the big update they have planned. I am looking forward to it, considering how much great work they have done till now.
Also; jump scares are cheap and lazy. They are not actually scary.
Though it can happen that a ghost does that sometimes. I had a ghost spawning for a spook only 1 meter away of me. Together with the heartbeat it made me screaming shortly (play in VR though).
With a screaming ghost I would also see the same issues like Honey Drake. It would annoy me more to lower the audio volume and can't hear other ghost noises instead.
The new ghost noises (singing, humming, laughing, crying) are quite good actually. We had the singing one walking around in Asylum searching for us. That was spooky :)
Let's see. The Horror 2.0 changes are yet to come. With halluzinations based on your own sanity. I see forward to.
The ghost often appears out of nowhere, hushes at you, interacts with items you're using, clicking doors, blinking lights, menacingly stomping during hunts to make you scared and run for your life.
I think you're just not trying to immerse enough to even start to care about things like those.
When you're immersed enough, those things will become more startling.
A single jumpscare-ish death animation when the ghost kills you among a variety of others? Maybe.
A sudden animated ghost.png right in your face accompanied by a loud noise or anything sort of like that? HECK NO
This game is about tension, a creepy atmosphere where buildup and payoff are typically longer and more gradual. Jumpscares are immediate, and usually over just as quick as they started. Even when the ghost "jumpscares" you by appearing suddenly at least it gives you some time and personal space. The ghost always has a physical presence in the game and I don't think it's really possible to add proper jumpscares without detatching from that.
One of the reasons I love this game is that there is almost no jump scares like other horror games and you don't have to wait until someone/something screams at you or a ghost face appears on your monitor.
This game relies on atmosphere and that's the best part.
And ghosts that scream the entire time they're visible would just be painful for some people.
