Guide: Voice Recognition
Here are some steps you can take to fix the voice recognition. This will get updated as more info is found.

Please make sure you don't skip a step.

1. Make sure your input device on windows is the microphone you want to use.
2. Go into "Speech Settings" on windows and download and install the English US language package. This will install the necessary voice recognition drivers.
3. In "Speech Settings" at the top check the box "Recognise non-native accents for this language".
4. Select your language as your voice language.
5. Under language settings click on your language, go to options and then download the speech package.
6. Go into "Online Speech Recognition" on windows and make sure that is turned on.
7. Go into "Microphone privacy settings" and make sure Phasmophobia has permission to use your microphone.
8. Go to "Cortana Language Settings" and apply your language at the bottom.
9. Update your windows 10. Go to "Check for updates" and make sure you are on version 2004.
10. Do not run Steam as Admin. For some reason this is breaking the voice recognition.
11. Head into the "other" page in options on the main menu and set your voice language there.
12. Go to the audio options in the main menu and use the voice recognition test to check if it is working.
13. If it still isn't working some people have got it working by moving the game onto their main hard drive.
14. Make sure no other application on your computer is taking control of your microphone before playing.
15. If it still doesn't work at this point try using the English UK voice pack instead.

Please make sure your voice recognition is setup and working in Windows 10.

Had a lot of the same problems as people in here, but found my solution.
It turned out that windows had not installed the speech pack correctly when I installed windows.

To "fix" this I went to Setting -> Time & Language -> Language

And under preferred languages clicked on my preferred language "drop-down" (add one if needed)

Went into options and manually downloaded the speech pack.
(Remember to pick the language you just downloaded the pack for, up top of the window)

To set up the Speech Recognition. Hit Windows Key + R -> Run -> type Control Panel -> Speech Recognition. Set it up and try again.

That fixed it for me.

Why is the voice chat so complicated? why is it so specific, whereas in other games you never have to be this technical? They usually auto pick up your mic

Probably since it needs to work with WHAT you say, not just record it

It has to work with Windows speech crap to get it to work

We've tried every fix in this thread and no go. a shame cause it looked fun to play with friends. we couldnt get our friend's mic to work even if it worked with everything else

I can hear people in game. They can hear me in the lobby, but after about a minute my microphone quits working to talk to people. The ghost detect my voice, I've done all the setups.
-I've uninstalled, reinstalled
-I have it on my HHD and SSD, played it both ways and it does the same thing
-I've switch my USB cables around
-I turned off push-to-talk in the game
-I've messed with settings I didn't know I had
-Steam is not in admin mode
-I've made it so that Phasmophobia is primary in my task manager when playing
-closed discord
-had only Phasmo open
my voice still shuts off. I honestly don't know what else to do to fix this.

After working with a friend who's voice recognition works.. I had him look at microphone privacy settings while we were in-game. When he runs the in-game audio test, he says "Speechruntime.exe" is accessing his microphone, for me, that isn't showing. I can see it running in task manager though. Not sure why because I have voice recognition on.

*UPDATE
After finding that my Steam shortcut had compatibility mode for Windows 8 set, and unchecking that, "Speech Runtime Executable" showed up in "Microphone Privacy Settings" while playing the game. I now pass the in-game voice recognition test and it's responding correctly while playing a map as well.

♥♥♥♥ this game cant even get the mics to work

I seem to be having a problem not entirely consistent with everyone else here. First off, despite having everything set up as described in the post, the menu diagnostic tool never works, and if I look, at that point the app is not using my mic at all.

Then, I go into the game and it starts using my mic, and sometimes this VC works, but the responses almost never register. I can sit there talking for 15 minutes, and nothing happens. Then my friend walks in and it works on their first try.

I speak fluent english. I have no idea why this is happening

That sounds exactly like what was happening to me. Look at your shortcut to start Steam and make sure it has NOTHING checked in Properties>Compatibility. I had compatibility for Windows 8 in the Compatibility Mode section for some freaking reason. As soon as I got rid of that it worked. Also make sure you aren't running Steam as Admin. Go to the Steam folder on your computer and right click steam.exe and check compatibility again.
