How does the Spirit box actually work?
Loving the game, but one thing drives me and my friends mad. What do the different outputs from the spirit box mean exactly?

To make the spirit box work, you have to turn off the lights in the room you think/know where the ghost is and start talking to the ghost.

Ask him stuff like: "How old are you?", "Where are you?"

If you are lucky, the ghost will answer and you have your evidence.

Also important to check the white board in the van. Some ghosts only respond to people who are alone.

You need to get into rooms and talk to the ghost with the voice proximity command (V) with the spirit box turned on. Some ghosts only respond when you are alone. If it says "nothing detected" it means it's not an evidence. You need to be patient and probably check every room in the map.

Hope it helped.

i've heard people claiming "nothing detected" means the box is or is not picking up voice.

in my experience, so long as local voice chat works for you, the box will work.

generally, you have to have the box in the ghost's favorite room. you can be holding it or not. you can ask it questions, and those do provoke answers, but it will respond to just about any noise coming through your mic. solo, keying voice coms may not be necessary, but in groups it's responded both to local and radio being keyed.

of note, especially on intermediate difficulty maps or harder, the ghost may just hold back on the box. i've noticed that as difficulty goes up, the ghost gets stingier with providing evidence.

I haven't needed to use the Local or Global chat before, as for it being evidence, not all ghosts will speak to the box.

Windows speech recognition also needs to be installed and possibly setup for the game to understand and respond to you.

Hello, hello, hello, is there anybody out there? Knock if you can hear me... Is there anyone at all?

Well if you have a hunch on what the ghost is, you might not even need to use the spirit box... like when I had to deal with an Oni ghost, went into the kitchen to check the water since that was one of the optional objectives, see its clean so when I went towards the living room instant EMF Level 5 reading and when I put the book on the kitchen counter, when I checked it I saw that a demonic pentagram was drawn on it which there's only two ghosts that kind of evidence would fall under.

Skip to 3:50, she explains how it works in rl (because that's how I understood the question).
The outputs of the spirit box are supposed to be the answers the ghost gives to your questions, if you got the right frequency. They might also be just broken words from a radio show. Who knows.
