Usage of the word "Smudging"
Not me okay but a friend was mentioning the terms Smudge Stick and Smudging is a form of cultural appropriation since the term refers to a sacred practice in multiple native american spiritual beliefs. The easiest alternative term would just be "Saging" & "Sage Bundle"; Apparently this is a well known thing among people who are into the occult.

Edit:
Lmao you guys are funny giving me beef for an opinion that isn't even mine! haha anyway, calm down karen. I was just curious of what people think and would say~ :3 So thank you for the feedback! U w U

Lol. So you want it changed because you cant use the same words as a native american? What do you have against native americans?

Does anyone actually care about this.

I actually like the idea of calling it saging, it's more universally known. Though ultimately IDGAF.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

A quick google shows they are using the words correctly. You're being nit picky for no reason.

Just goes to show you how people will look for anything to get potentially offended by.

There is nothing wrong with the word and it is not 'cultural appropriation.' That is just dumb.

I mean yes it would seem that way but I just wanted to know how other people would react. And I was assuming that this would get hate and attacks lmao. And you guys seem to prove me right! :) Besides I'm not the one who cares much about it, my friend does. I only posted a discussion about it here since nobody really posted one about it when I looked it up. I don't really post much on discussion boards. I know it doesn't really matter and you just don't want someone to conform to their opinions. it's just merely my curiosity U w U
I do think my friend is being ridiculous because it's just a game and it doesn't really need to change for someone's opinion. But looking at it at a different angle it's just how things are. It's normal to disagree so it's okay! :)

huh? you clearly have this the other way around buddy. it's just stealing yet again from a marginalized group cuz "they like the aesthetics". :lunar2019laughingpig: :lunar2019laughingpig: :lunar2019laughingpig:

So, A cleansing ritual cant be named smudging because Native Americans used that word, there for its stealing if you use the name they gave it?? Do you hate Native Americans that much that you don't want people to use a word that they made for this ritual?

I find it more offensive that you have the audacity to try to police this and dictate what it should and shouldn't be called. Also Youve made a big deal about this with the "My friend thinks its offensive but I dont care. Just thought I'd bring it here to the forums." Clearly by your response, you are the one who finds it offensive, not your friend.

This is on par of destroying a Navajo's artwork and name creation for a football team because a non-Navajo was butthurt on behalf of people who weren't offended to start with.

Smudging is an English word.

If you or your friend are offended then don't play the game simple as that I mean if the term smudging is too much to handle I don't know what to tell you.
JohnnyBonny Oct 2, 2020 @ 5:56am
It's not a native word. It was a from of pest control that over time evolved into the ghost hunting and mythical sphere.
