There is no in-game monetization in this game, so we don't have a budget to provide free servers. It's probably for the best if that turns people away... if we had to pay other people's cooperative servers for a free game, we'd be bankrupt in a week.
Operation: Harsh Doorstop is a truly free game that can be used however you like. Hosting your own servers is also part of this. In other free games providing servers, there are systems in place that monetize the players, which covers the costs associated with providing the servers.
Therefore, the decision is yours.
Run your own server and play OHD... or play a free game with microtransactions and ads to pay for their servers.
Whether we turn people away or not doesn't factor into this matter.
I guess it could help fund the game, plus it would help distinguish servers led by folks who are more serious about it. Kinda like Squad's "Licensed / Community" servers, except that Squad doesn't charge for "Licensed" servers, just has a list of extra requirement, such as at least 10 admins.
Thoughts?
Isn't that just the same as renting a server?

You can literally just rent a server from AWN right now.
It could be extended to rental servers as well, but in this case it would be "slightly" more complicated. :)
I'm just thinking in ways to help fund the project moving forward.
(BTW, thanks for your work.)
Verification could be in the form of an encrypted token, public/private keys etc, that one could upload to the server and have it validate somewhere, so it could be used both in private and public servers.
Just an idea. ;) Cheers!
I'm not really following... there is no license. The server files are available for free on Steam. Look for "Operation: Harsh Doorstop - Dedicated Server" on Steam when the game launches.
I'm not sure if you're referring to other games (like Squad) that require you to have a license to have your server show up in the server browser, but our game does not require that at all. We believe in the server files being freely available, and they will be.
You will not need to pay anything to get access to the server files, or to have your server show up in the server browser. You can easily host from your own computer if you like, without any license.
Nah server licenses are lame. I mean idk maybe we'll make it so supporters can have their server have like a "we supported the game" tag or something like that AT MOST, but I never intend to limit people from hosting a server depending on whether they paid or not
