Why is the discussion page full of salt?
As an American, I've never paid too much attention to the whole issue in regards to Brexit (although obviously I'm aware of what it is and all that). I'm assuming if one were to live in the UK, the salt would make more sense.

Half of the discussions are just insulting the developer for making the game and calling them an "SJW" (which if you still use this term in 2018, rethink your vocabulary). I haven't been able to find any issues that the developer did on Steam or elsewhere that would warrant the backlash.

Edit: Upon double checking, it looks like most of those threads have been deleted, but the question still stands.

I'm here to actually give an answer to your question. The best way to describe Brexit is "a procedure to become independent from the EU." As you can imagine any type of independence is a dicy issue, and any negativity around what happens after "independence" is jumped on as scaremongering. If someone says "after Brexit we'll all lose money" then that's considered scaremongering.

This game seems to portray a negative version of Brexit so supporters would jump on this as whatever they called it (I didn't see any of threads but I imagine the term "Remoaner" was used). A good comparsion for yourself is imagine just after Trump won someone made a game about the US being a dictatorship or in ruins, supporters would jump on this as scaremongering/negative etc.

I hope that answers your question. To everyone else, I am not pushing an agenda I'm trying to answer someone's question. I am not a gammon/remoaner/Brexiteer/SJW/facist etc.

I would likely have to add one caveat to your answer here, which otherwise, does answer the question fairly well.

Notably, that caveat is that while you can certainly make some very interesting stories in dystopian settings that address real world issues it is a questionable thing to do when talking about a currently occuring social issue.

In a discussion about Brexit there are many arguements to be made on either side of the subject (hence it's such a hotly contested subject), things such as the potential for recession, issues surrounding how to handle people who have moved here under the EU guidelines for freedom of movement and how to handle further continued co-operation with the EU while outside of it are very legitimate concerns that can all make for interesting subjects in speculative fiction.

Simply having the UK descend into being a hellishly Orwellian state that treats anyone who isn't purely British (those of 'European descent') as second class citizens with no automony or personal freedom goes so far into the realm of extreme consequences that I don't think it's a reach to call it scaremongering, it would be similar to a game in which they protray the acceptance of gay marriage as causing a sharp delcine in society, ending in a perverted gay oligarchy that abducts children for sexual exploitation while keeping heterosexual people locked in concentration camps for labour and breeding purposes, you'd assume that the creator of such a game held some very retrograde views on homsexuality and likely had an agenda to push (given the extremity of the scenario they provide, likely in an attempt to shock and horrify the audience).
You've made some good points Dr Marker, though I still believe this could be considered scaremongering (not by me though as it's not like this is going to happen overnight, not tonight) on the basis of a lot of things could be considered scaremongering.

So, I can see your game as having one of either messages:

1. It's premise is unironic

Thereby a game whereby its core message is to denounce legitimate depictions of scaremongering, yet ironically ends up being a demonstration of the very scaremongering that you are criticising.

2. It is developed ironically as a critique on the Brexit = Fascist mindset that Remainers like to rant and rave about.

Either way, in my personal opinion, with the way the EU is going from articles 11 and 13; the driving of its member nations such as Greece to recession, and the widespread instability such as the France, Germany, and Sweden, I am more inclined to believe that the EU is much more authoritarian. Especially, since its members of "Parliament" are appointed rather than voted in by the public.

I'm always very careful when I hear someone try to defend something as being 'ironic' because it is a very easy way to duck out of having to accept any kind of criticism for one's work, used as an intellectually lazy 'no, you' style of response when a flaw is pointed out or difficult questions are raised (especially considering how often you see this defense being applied to things retroactively).

It's much easier to say that you succeeded at intentionally failing and that everyone else just doesn't get it than to own up to making a mistake or hearing where you need to improve.
