Slipstream

Blatant Drift Stage copy?
This looks very much like Drift Stage. Is it worth getting or should I just wait for Drift Stage and see how that turns out?

I literally thought this was Drift Stage when I first saw it on the Steam store. That game has been in development for so long that I forgot its name.

This game has been in development for over two years.
Disregarding the fact that the two are just games in the same, already existing genre, I don't see how Slipstream can be a copy of a game that isn't even out yet?
Also, as far as I can see, Drift Stage uses polygonal graphics with pixel art aesthetic, while Slipstream is a more pure experience with fully raster 2D graphics.

Not even close to the same. And Drift Stage's release is likely another 20 years away.

Not even close? Weird. I see many similarities. Oh well, I'll check it out anyway. As you said, Drift Stage will probably take some time still. I mean as long as it's enjoyable it doesn't really matter all that much.

these games are similar, but not the same. drift stage uses actual 3d and aims for a somewhat different style, whereas this one uses pseudo-3d, much like "outrun".

either way, "slipstream" is a really well-made game. it basically takes all the stuff that made outrun nice (good-looking areas, nice handling, tight-but-fair difficulty) and improves on it with extra mechanics (slipstreaming and drifting), additional challenges (rivals in arcade mode) and new modes (like the custom races and cups).

Implying Drift Stage will actually be completed. lol

These games have very similar styles. I mean, they're set to resemble late 80's, early 90's Arcade Racers like Chase HQ and OutRun.

But their approach are not the same. They have really different drift mechanics and the style of graphics is really galaxies apart.

Drift Stage uses polygons with low rendering to emulate what it would have been an arcade racing right out from Sega Titan/Sega Saturn 3D with many polygonal assets being made in a way to fool you into thinking they're 2D. The whole aesthetic is very neon and flat-colored.

Whereas in Slipstream, besides the terrain, everything is a 2D sprite graphic. It tries to emulate SuperScaler graphics. Also, the graphics are a nice splash of vibrant colors with many different locations. You can still have 80's look and feel without dipping everything into MA3A's innards.

So, yeah. If anything, the creators of OutRun should be complaining that Slipstream is copying them. :P

They started development around the same time, but while Drift Stage is closer to Daytona, this one is more like Top Gear with a drifting mechanic. If anything, it could be considered a Horizon Chase "ripoff", but even then...

Also guess what, making games takes a long-ass time, 3 years of devtime is little more than a standard cycle.

delete this, fam.

This is as much a copy of Drift Stage as Duke Nukem is a copy of Doom.
