But yeah, using either a memory card or password means you don't have to 100% the game in a single sitting as you get the chance to save every time you obtain a gem.
Even then, the password always saved progress, even if the memory card did not (I don't have the link right now, but I read that on the Crash wiki).
Also, password saves with gems changes your password save to a "SUPER Password" that adds 16 extra symbols to the overall password for a total of 24, whereas regular passwords are only 8 symbols long but do not record any gems collected; only level progress. Memory card saves are not affected by this, however.
Lastly, the password feature was disabled in the Japanese version and therefore requires a memory card to save.
