No way.
That require no death run. Without saves. Without checkpoints. NO single falling!
u know memory card exist right ? and that u can repeat a level after beat the game right? XD
Poorly worded, but I think they meant that in the original PS1 version, you have to beat a level and smash every single crate without dying once. Even when using a memory card, they only save already obtained gems, not mid-level progress. Although it's nice that you don't need to reach a bonus room save point to keep your gems; they'll be recorded as soon as you obtain one.

But yeah, using either a memory card or password means you don't have to 100% the game in a single sitting as you get the chance to save every time you obtain a gem.

well I mastered SMB1, 2, and 3, and Sonic 2 as a kid, Crash 1 released when I was 22, but I'm sure I could have done it.

The original Crash 1 had two separate saves. The one after obtaining a gem would save your gem progress and the one at the end of Tawna bonuses saves your level progress. NST replaced both of them with a general save on the level map, but made all the crates in bonus rooms count towards the gem.

Even then, the password always saved progress, even if the memory card did not (I don't have the link right now, but I read that on the Crash wiki).

Both saving methods work the exact same way; it's just that one does not require writing down a bunch of symbols to pick up where you left off but takes up an entire block on the memory card, and vice-versa for the other method.

Also, password saves with gems changes your password save to a "SUPER Password" that adds 16 extra symbols to the overall password for a total of 24, whereas regular passwords are only 8 symbols long but do not record any gems collected; only level progress. Memory card saves are not affected by this, however.

Lastly, the password feature was disabled in the Japanese version and therefore requires a memory card to save.
