when you put things in that way - the core mechanics of Crash Bandicoot is, what? to move from one checkpoint to another, right? like in Dark Souls
furthermore, if you die then all enemies and obstacles are back and you must kill them anew. like in Dark Souls
when you kill enemies you obtain their apples, like shards/souls
sometimes you get Estus-like item that prolongs your life - Aku-Aku mask, but are very far in between
your character is squishy and dies from one hit, and you must dodge/avoid enemies and their attacks to survive
so, from that point of view, yes Dark Souls actually borrowed lots of gameplay elements from Crash Bandicoot and must be renamed as such
I've been saying the same for years about onimusha who also got tagged as souls like even though it came out way before it. And ofc no souls game will ever match the greatness of onimusha 3.
From software must have a very good marketing team, they are changing the history of videogames just to fit their rhetoric XD
