My suggestion. WASD or something near - as arrows. QE as L1-2. Arrows (some tiny KB have buttons close to them) or something near or numeric 1-3/5 as 4 main buttons, 4/6 as R1-2. Like classic DualShock.
You already did that, right?
I once played the N. Sane Trilogy remake of the second and third games on PS4 in 2017. Though I found the controls to be very stiff compared to the tight controls that I remembered from the original versions of the first three games.
Since I've never owned any of the Crash Bandicoot games, I've always been a novice player. I've only been playing the N. Sane Trilogy on PC since the 7th July of this year when I got it from Steam.
I started off playing with just the default controls. But the mouse and the keyboard were too far apart for me to get satisfactory reflexes. By the time my fingers had moved from the keyboard to the mouse or the mouse to the keyboard, I had already wasted too much time to avoid taking damage.
So in addition to the default controls, I added the K button for Spinning, the L button for Crouching and Sliding, the G button for Status and Inventory, the H button for the Fruit Bazooka - though I tend to use the Q button more, and the J button for Crash Dash.
I acquired my first Platinum Relic on the 12th July of this year in the level 'Area 51?'. Just barely though. It was the first time I'd ever gotten a Platinum Relic in a Crash Bandicoot game.
I was very surprised because I was still fairly new to the level and had never gotten a relic for that level before. I was expecting to get a Sapphire Relic at best. Not long after that, I got Platinum Relics for 'Orange Asphalt' and 'Road Crash'. Followed by Platinum Relics for 'Deep Trouble' and 'Under Pressure'. Then Platinum Relics for 'Makin' Waves' and 'Tell No Tales'.
I don't think I started collecting relics for the first and second games until this month, since I didn't realise they were required for the maximum percentage. I did get a Sapphire Relic for 'Turtle Woods' last month though since I was bored.
The only levels I recall getting a Platinum Relic without getting any relics beforehand are the already mentioned 'Area 51?', 'Boulders', and 'Whole Hog'. For every other level, I had to get a Sapphire and/or Gold Relic before I could even think about getting a Platinum one.
'Bee-Having' was a tough level for me to get a Platinum Relic — pretty much all the levels at best have been somewhat tough for me to get a Platinum Relic — because my current keyboard settings make it very difficult for me to press the K and L buttons at the same time with one of my fingers already on the J button and another finger over the space bar for when I needed to jump.
I had to make sure I pressed the K and L buttons together, with the L button a few milliseconds before the K button, because I was currently on the purple soil. And if I'd pressed the K button, I would have gone under the soil instead of Slide Jump + Spin. And I didn't want that.
My current keyboard settings have been working for me so far. Though there were numerous occasions where I was beginning to wonder if I'd ever be able to acquire certain gems or relics.
Today I was feeling quite frustrated over the fact that I haven't been able to reach the end of 'Stormy Ascent' without dying. And the fact that I haven't been able to do a time trial in 'Turtle Woods' without falling into at least one pit. Which is what motivated me to ask if anyone knew if there were any better keyboard control arrangements than the ones I'm currently using.
I haven't tried your suggestion yet or anything similar. Although it is something that I may consider. From what little I remember trying the WASD buttons, they weren't anywhere near as good as my current keyboard settings. Although that may be because I've barely needed to consider adjusting to them.
These are the controls that I originally used before I switched to using the J, K, and L buttons:
Move Left = Left
Move Right = Right
Move Backward = Down
Move Forward = Up
Jump = Space
Attack = Left Click (not currently used in favour of the K button)
Slide/Crouch = Right Click (not currently used in favour of the L button)
Status/Inventory = Tab
Equip Bazooka = Q
Crash Dash = Shift (not currently used in favour of the J button)
As for rest keybinding... here im not sure for 100%. I still suggest bind contlors imagine you do play PS1\2 emulator on KB. Bind it not like actions - but try to bind it as DualShock gamepad for original games. Make all buttong closer to each others.
Probably use ESDF as arrow and QT as L1-2. Not literally closer for each button. Im personally use SZXC+AD (when try without GP), but its only temporar. Better to play it on Gamepad. It is standard gaming input device even on PC (always has been).
As for Stormy Ascent. Its not so hard-timed for Platinum. Faling is main issue. And you admit it is for you. Dont rush it too much.
Probably look at some time trials YT video (GarlandtheGreat casual YT player, but not usual streamers - he did play CB games very well and at same time you can repeat what he did). To check how much free time and lebel timings you have. Some level have enough time - a lot. Some more harder limits.
At least for Gold, all level have enough time. Dont rush too much and try not to fall. Just run and make it to the end alive, nothing special need for Gold; s Relics. Some Platinum are really can be hard and require rugh it with all trics you can do).
My timing is off in several parts of the level, particularly the second and last thirds of the level. The farthest I've managed to get without dying is at 2:47 in this video where I got hit by the purple potion. I'd run out of Aku Aku masks at that point. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AMCB-VJkKyM&t=2m47s
I was just lucky to have made it that far without dying. I have since tried several times to get that far or further without dying. But I haven't prevailed. Since I either lost my Aku Aku masks too quickly, I mistimed my jumps, or my jumps weren't 100% responsive.
The part at 1:19 can also be quite tough. As there are two sets of rotating platforms, each containing one platform that I want to avoid because the vertical distance between the platform I have to jump from and the platform I have to jump to is too great for me to safely make the jump. However as of recently, I have sort of learned how to tell which platforms of each set I should avoid.
The part at 1:40 wouldn't be too bad. If it wasn't for the fact that I am very rarely able to make it past each of the five retractable staircases without taking damage. The first three are easy. The fourth one is medium. While the last one is difficult. Since it retracts faster than the other ones. Although I can sometimes avoid the spikes underneath if I try to run up the staircase while it is retracted.
'The High Road' = New Best Time: 1:01.33 = I obtained this one by persistently jumping on the fence rope. Though it was difficult. Even though I found jumping on the rope easier to maintain my balance than running on it, I still fell off the rope if I didn't land close enough to the centre of the rope. I probably could have gotten a better time, had I not fallen near the end of the level during one of my failed attempts to get the Platinum Relic. I probably could have gotten below 1:01.00 or even 1:00.00. Oh well. At least I got the relic, I suppose.
'Turtle Woods' = New Best Time: 0:45.28 = I almost got the Platinum Relic twice today, but I landed in the first pit during my first almost successful attempt. While I landed in the second pit during my second almost successful attempt. Even though I landed in the second pit during my successful attempt, I somehow managed to get the Platinum Relic, 19 milliseconds under the Platinum Relic time. Since I had a good run in all other parts of the level. I'm amazed that I landed in one of the pits but still got the relic. GarlandtheGreat claimed that you had to avoid landing in any of the pits to get a Platinum Relic. But then he used Crash Dash to go faster. Whereas I used Slide Jump + Crash Dash, which is quicker than Crash Dash on its own.
'Ruination' = New Best Time: 1:04.07 = This was a really tough one. But given the time I got yesterday, I thought that I should try and obtain the Platinum Relic for this level today. The toughest obstacles in this level for me were the three rotating platforms near the end of the level. As they are slow as snails and take multiple seconds to rotate. And the Fire-Breathing Tikis which also take several seconds to stop breathing fire. Regardless of how slow or how fast I went, it seemed like they were always breathing fire when I approached them. Forcing me to wait from a second to multiple seconds.
'Plant Food' = New Best Time: 0:55.66 = This one was definitely easier for me. But still quite tough. Since the Platinum Relic time for this level is rather tight. And there's barely room for error. The toughest part is having to keep both Aku Aku masks until near the end of the level. Since it is near if not impossible to get past the Man-Eating Plants without losing at least one Aku Aku mask.
I also improved my times for the following levels today:
'The Pits' = New Best Time: 1:07.04 = I was able to avoid landing in the second pit, which could explain why I was able to get a better time.
'Crash Dash' = New Best Time: 1:03.90
'Cold Hard Crash' = New Best Time: 2:02.35
'Crash Crush' = New Best Time: 1:17.15
'Bone Yard' = New Best Time: 1:26.39
'Dino Might!' = New Best Time: 1:05.30
'Hang 'em High' = New Best Time: 0:49.82
As you may have noticed by this comment and all my previous comments, I currently don't have any Platinum Relics for the chase levels in the second and third games. That's because it's not easy to go fast and avoid enemies and hazards when you're running towards the camera as opposed to away from the camera.
The Crash Dash powerup is hard to use in the chase levels. Because you can't jump while running towards the camera if you're using the Crash Dash powerup. I still haven't got a Game Pad. Although I am considering getting one. Since there are some levels that I'm having a hard time trying to get a Platinum Relic for with a keyboard.
