Back when Crash 3 originally released on the PS1, I thought to myself "I wish relics existed in the first two games". The Trilogy was like a dream come true in that regard, for me.
So, personally, I think relics were a good idea and improves on the replayability a little.
Anyway, Relics don't hurt the games, if you don't like them you can simply ignore them since they're not required for anything other than percentage completion display.
Only the Gold ones are mandatory for achievements though. I would agree if they required Platinums too because some of those are insane, but Golds are fairly accessible.
I would've preferred to have been done with the game after the gems. Or make the Relics rely on something else, like getting every single Wumpa Fruit in the stage (setting things up so that this is consistently possible, of course), in which case there is only a single relic for each stage.
Maybe an orange one.

Edit: Relics are just a big grind, once you do it for long enough without getting infuriated (me all the time) you'll get it eventually.
Honestly, I found certain easy stages have some of the hardest Platinums. In longer/harder stages there's usually some room for mistakes.
