Protip, jump on the ropes on the sides, and run along them. Smooth sailing through the bridge levels, easy.
No, my memory is correct, but the way you wrote: "In the original Crash 1 game, you only had one chance at doing the bonus stages. If you failed it, you had to restart the entire level. Also if you died after hitting a checkpoint in a level, you destroy your chances of getting any Gem (even clear)..."
I felt implied that in the remake, dying after hitting a checkpoint still enabled you to get the gem. You're allowed to die in bonus stages after hitting a checkpoint, but in the regular level after hitting a checkpoint, dying means you can't get the gem without restarting the entire level.
you hit a checkpoint and die, you restart the level.
you die in a bonus stage you restart the level (BOXES IN THE BONUS STAGE COUNT)
you die in a bonus stage after hitting a checkpoint, i THINK you have to restart the level as well
IN THE REMAKE
you die at all, no restarting the level (unless going for a colored gem)
that being said if you did die in the originals you theoretically COULD still get the gem if you backtracked through the level and went on to not die. because if you died it would reset all the boxes, its just simpler to restart the level
I can beat the levels just fine but it took a while for younger me to realise that breaking all boxes would give out a gem despite the box counter seen at the end of a level.
Or OP can just ignore the Time Trials, they're completely optional in Crash 1 & 2.
The controls doesn't feel worse to me but I'm aware they changed the jumping physics to match Crash 3's.
