Works alright with keyboard and mouse, but remember the nostalgia about this game is to play it with a controller

And with the D-pad, if anybody is able to play these games with the analog stick I praise you.

I find it much, much easier with keyboard though. Main reason being d-pads. I don't think a modern controller without an extremely crappy d-pad even exists. DS4 is workable, but it's still miles off from the tactile feedback and precision of a keyboard.

Probably you can make the analog stick behave like a dpad with steam big picture.
I mean keep it analog but only in 4 directions, removing diagonals

My old PS1 controllers weren't DualShock so I had to do with the Dpad

I didn't find it that bad with an analog stick. The game seems to have a pretty generous threshold where it has you move either forward, backward, sideways, or diagonally rather than having you move in the exact direction the analog is moving in. Basically, it's like the movement in Dark Souls 2. It makes life easier with analog sticks.

Consider looking into the Switch Pro Controller.
