This trick should work with AMD cards too.
Not for me. I disable that option for every game since I hate it, but without disabling vsync in my GPU control panel Crash won't have its framerate unlocked.
Works here.
LC24FG73 FreeSync 144hz + GTX1060 through DisplayPort.
My configs are, V-Sync off, and highest available refresh rate available on nvidia control panel, for the framerate i use the Afterburner to stay inside freesync range (1~144fps, possible because LFC)

Sht... It didn't work. Still locked at 60hz.
I just turned off, but it was set to follow the software's settings. And since it was off on the game, then this also didn't work for me :(
