Square textures on the ground

After finishing the game, I can tell its great! But there is one thing that was distracting in first 1/3 of the game (later I didnt notice this happening). When I was in some locations, ground was squared. Normal textures were blending in with some.. black/other. This ♥♥♥♥ is so boring until the part where the demo starts little over halfway thru the game
and it actually becomes really good

One of the most painfully slow games I have ever played.

I like narrative driven, linear games. But this one is too much. This game is easily the best made worst game I have played. There is no "tense" feeling in this game cause everything is scripted. You have "choices" sure, but they all lead to the same path. You wonder why only 50% of players have even completed this game? It's simply not worth any ones time to play this. You'd have more fun slamming your ding-dong in a door jamb....

It's always nice to see more retrofuturism in gaming. In my mind (and in the minds of most other gamers, I presume), franchises like Fallout and Bioshock tend to suck up most of the oxygen. It's a welcome reprieve from the ubiquity of cyberpunk and dystopian sci-fi, so I suppose you could say I was predisposed to enjoying the visual design of The Invincible
Just look how curvy and art deco those spaceships are; there's so much seemingly functionless form in their designs. Every man-made surface is as round and cornerless as possible. This is the future your grandparents were sold on
Ironically, the only "organic" lines present in the game are those curvy equipment and vehicle contours. Regis III is a jagged, mountain-covered landscape full of harsh angles, and the... let's just say other... constructs you encounter are much more angular as well
While not exactly an invigorating listen on its own, the soundtrack is perfect for the game's setting and often slow pace. The carefully arranged synth and orchestral backing tracks lend a sense of mystery and foreboding to the game's action. To further highlight the retrofuturism, you may even notice some vinyl crackle underlying some of the audio
Altogether, the audiovisual experience does a great job pulling you into the world and standing up walls around it. "Immersion" is sometimes an overused word when it comes to games, but it's hard not to trot it out here. It's easy to get lost in the world of Regis III both literally and figuratively

Story & Vibes

But even copious amounts of worldbuilding contribute little to a game if the story isn't up to snuff, so it's a relief to report that the narrative here is quite intriguing
Based on the novel of the same name by Stanisław Lem, The Invincible puts you in the shoes of Yasna, astrobiologist of the Interplanetary Commonwealth research vessel The Dragonfly
What was supposed to be a standard research mission on the world of Regis III winds up going south very quickly. Or, at least, that's a pretty safe assumption to make when you wake up alone from being unexpectedly unconscious on a mostly uncharted world with several holes in your memory
Fortunately, you're able to recover some of your gear and make contact with your captain for additional guidance and instruction before too long. Unfortunately, he doesn't have much good news to share. The rest of your crew is missing, and the massive capital ship of the Cosmosolidary Alliance, the titlular Invincible is bearing down on your location
You don't know why the Alliance is heading there, but two things are clear: 1) A capital ship doesn't just go to an uncharted planet for leisurely sightseeing, and 2) Your captain doesn't seem to be telling you everything he knows
By the time you start making headway into your rescue mission to find your missing crewmates, it becomes clear that things are even more dire. Without delving too deeply into spoilers, they certainly don't seem the same as when you last saw them
After accounting for your crew, your captain eventually confesses the reason that The Dragonfly was sent to Regis III. It's a little more complicated than the simple research mission that Yasna was expecting. You'll delve into the mystery that lies at the heart of the planet and find out why two warring factions are seeking to control such a desolate place
It's worth mentioning that your actions have a pretty notable effect on how the plot plays out, resulting in almost a dozen different endings. Some seem like variations on a theme, while others turn out very differently. I'll talk a little more about the choose-your-own-adventure mechanics in the next section
In terms of atmosphere and vibes, The Invincible's worldbuilding does a lot of heavy lifting. Regis III is a red, mountainous, and mostly arid rock, and despite the almost constant daytime, there's an omnipresent sense of dread arising from the plot's events and the fact that you're trying to conduct a rescue mission while hostile forces are inbound. This is not a feel-good story. It's a slow burn full of dread and anxiety. Too slow? Yes, but mostly because of the gameplay

Playability & Replayability

The Invincible plays out as a narrative adventure/walking simulator title with choose-your-own-adventure elements. Most of the game's runtime sees you directing Yasna (either on foot or by vehicle) across and beneath the surface of Regis III to complete objectives at your captain's request
In some respects, the closest comparison I could make in terms of gameplay would be something like Firewatch. You're in frequent communication with an unseen boss who's giving you directives in a large, unpopulated area with infrequent signs of human life. Just add in a dash of player agency and move the whole affair to space, and you're about 80% of the way there
As far as the choice system goes, some parts are implemented fairly cleverly. When checking out the other endings besides the one I earned, I learned that there's actually a vital choice roughly halfway through the game's action. Your captain gives you the option of heading to 1 of 2 different locations, and your decision can lock you into certain endings
As you make your way around the planet, you'll occasionally stumble upon items you can interact with that otherwise have no bearing on what you're doing. These will activate one of Yasna's missing memories, and finding them will reveal some backstory to you in the form of an old-school comic book page with some pretty great art
While there's not much else to say in terms of the moment-to-moment gameplay, it's worth mentioning that Yasna's movement speed is quite slow and some distances you have to span are quite large. Suffice it to say, this makes the game's slow-burn plot feel even more drawn out. If you're the impatient type, you're gonna have a rough time with this title. If you like to enjoy game environments, though, all that hiking will give you ample opportunity to soak up the sights
With so many endings, it's tempting to give the green light and call this an easily replayable game, and if the pace weren't so slow, I'd be fully onboard with that. Unfortunately, with the way the 10-hour runtime crawls by, I don't see myself revisiting any time soon

Overall Impressions & Performance

Expansive but sparse

As with most walking sims, The Invincible has to stand on the strength of its audiovisual design and narrative. Thankfully, both of those are top-notch. If the pacing were a little bit better, I'd have no complaints. As it stands, though, the plod to the end began testing my patience a little over halfway through
It wasn't too much of a chore to keep going, but I'd be lying if I said that my interest didn't begin to wane. Some of the latter half's plot points didn't have as much impact as they could have because I was just trying to finish the game at that point
Additionally, with very little action outside of a handful of segments and no puzzles to wrack your brain with, the gameplay is a bit dry even by genre standards. Sure there's plenty of exploration, but that's the only spice you get outside of your decisions having consequences
Outside of a few laggy parts (especially one late-game moment with a lot of things on-screen), this was a great play on the Steam Deck

Final Verdict
6.0/10. If you're looking for a good sci-fi story and don't mind a snail's pace punctuated by a few exciting segments, you'll get some enjoyment out of this. However, even for a lover of narrative-focused titles like myself, The Invincible is likely to test your patience

The Invincible is a narrative-driven walking simulator, offering gameplay similar to Firewatch. It boasts an engaging storyline and strong visual presentation. Sci-fi enthusiasts, particularly those who enjoy shows or literature in the genre, will find much to appreciate. One minor issue with blocky textures can be resolved by launching the game in DirectX 11 mode by adding "-dx11" (without quotes) to the launch options.
