Gene splicing for animals

I have unlocked the advanced splicing machine and made sure to splice a violet crystal blob, that eats flowers. However now it is roaming my farm it still wants to eat salt.
Did I miss something there?

The food types are additional food types: so your crystal blob critter should eat the three flower types in addition to salt, niter, and gems. Try dropping the new type on the creature!
