Low Ping = disadvantage in CS:GO?
On the Valve servers (on DM, Casual or Competetive) it seems to me that having a low ping seems to carry a distinct disadvantage, it actually appears to me like having severe lag.

I have a Intel Ivy i5 quad at 4Ghz, 8GB ram and a GTX760, 60hz screen (atm) running CS:GO off an SSD and more importantly for this issue: I have a wired connection (1Gbps, 2.4~2.6ms ping) to my gateway and a 200/20 fiber connection. Usually, I have 12-16ms ping on the scorescreen.

Now most of the times, when peeking, I die repeatedly to players with latencies over 60ms. These players can land 3-5 hits before they properly turned or peaked the corner, while I can simply only land 1 in the same time, while I know they were coming.

Now I know, in Casual, they can simply be better players, reacting faster, etc etc. I'm getting old, I'm not the fastest CS:GO player. But in competetive match making, this can also happen with players below my rank, with my ping at 15ms and theirs at 66. I simply am unable to damage them before they killed me, like having 300ms ping.

The funny thing is, when I'm on a competetive server with 50ms ping (probably because of the server location), I do not experience this at all! It seems the game favours 30-75ms?
The games where I had a higher latency, were actually the ones were I ended up a lot higher on the scoreboard. What is going on? Is there a network smoothing feature to tweak? Should I constrain my connection when playing CS:GO? Is this a server side bug?

I think there might be some truth to this. My ping is typically between 5-9ms as reported by CS servers. I've noticed that I do substantially better when i connect to a server that I ping >30 to. Keep in mind I'm only referring to entry kills and first engagements (peeks, etc..).

I had a game yesterday where everybody had 100+ ping. For some reason I managed to hit far better than in any games today with 30-60 ping. It's kinda odd.

Obviously OP has never played with 200 ping.

You think hitting that 1 person with high ping is hard? Try having that hitreg ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ on everybody. There is no disadvantage to having a low ping; this is stupid.

*edit* it should be said, that the difference between 30ms and 75ms is .045 seconds. Nobody has a reaction time that fast, your entire point is void.

Wow, never thought I'd see this thread again.

Well, Maverick kind of said it right; Now on a newer i5, 24GB, a 980 4GB and a wired 1000Gbit connection (both LAN & WAN) with a 450uS gateway delay and a ~2ms ping to my national exchange, I still notice that in games with a significantly lower ping than other players, the hitreg is pretty bad.

Now if all players have >15ms, the game feels awesome. Add in one guy at over 50ms and all of the sudden it feels like I have a 2/3rd second delay. That said, it is a bunch better now than it was. So thanks Valve for the work on this game.

Wow, never thought I'd see this thread again. HELLO.
Lag compensation is not an exact science. There is a cheat called "Backtrack" That makes this happen even when your ping is not high enough to warrent it happening. The effect produced is that. You can shoot behind the enemy by a certain amount and they'll still die.

Because it is not an exact science and higher ping fluctuates a little bit more. The server is a little bit more forgiving about the lag comp if your ping is high. And will produce scenerios where you can see your aim was off by a little bit and the enemy still dies. Also. The peekers advantage becomes much more apparent if your ping is 120 and theirs is 5. Because you've gotten to see them for ~120ms longer than they've been able to see you. So in high ping scenerios especially. Try to make sure you are always the peeker for the max advantage.

Tools on winows and linux exist to raise your ping but keep it smooth so you get the advantage. They're networking tools and not specifically meant for the purpose. But do work and provide a perfectly smooth 140ms. (Linux tool is TC Qdisc)
