CPU bottleneck on CS2. Any ideas?
Hej guys.

I got a bottleneck on my CPU (runnig on 100% usage while my GPU is not reaching 100%)
The higher ingame quality I use, the better FPS. I now run it on highest graphic and I reach 144 FPS. So far so good. But i get FPS drops quite often. I want it to run much smoother and keep the FPS up on a stable level.

Does anyone have any ideas or is it just to buy a new CPU?

Ive checked tons of youtube clips on bottleneck and increase FPS, but i cant mange. Let me know your thoughts.

Spec:
CPU - Intel i5 4690K 3,5 ghz. Overcloked to 4.4 ghz.
GPU - AMD radeon RX600
VRAM 8176 GDDR6 1750ghz
Screen - MSI g271 144

How are you checking your CPU usage? Did you check to make sure it is cs2 using all of your CPU?

I got myself i7 4790 and the game has poor optimization, I'm not saying I have top tier cpu, but the game doesn't utilize all cpu cores at all. There isn't anything you can do besides buying some top tier cpu that has high clock on cores, but you will still struggle with huge fps drops anyway.

Yup, your CPU is the bottleneck here. Unfortunately you'll have to upgrade soon or later.

Hi, I own neo 17 m21 and I have a wierd issue in cs2. When I load an empty map I have 450 fps with the CPU at ~60% and 45W and the GPU at 75% and 130W but as soon as I add bots to the game my gpu usage and power drops down significantly (40% usage and ~70W, CPU usage also drops to ~50% and power consumption at about 40W). I played around with the settings changing from very high preset to lowest possible and vice versa and fps did not change. This would suggest that my CPU is the bottleneck but as I said it's overall usage remains low and per core usage does not exceed 80%. Since swapping the cpu is not an option I was wondering if the bottleneck can be caused by my ram modules. I have 2x 1r16 cl22 corshair vegence, i7-11800h and 3080 165w. I know that this memory is pretty slow, so maybe replacing it will fix the issue?

It is also important to note that I observe the same behaviour in csgo as well which is way less demanding e-sport title from 2013 iirc, so it's crazy to me that I am cpu bottlenecked.. My cpu usage in csgo is 40% with low gpu usage and gpu power consumption just like cs2 when the bottleneck occurs.

Type this into your launch options "-threads 9".

Your CPU has 8 threads, but for some reason the game only runs on 6 of them. So basically this command forces the game to run on all available cores and threads.

For example,if you have 4 cores & 4 threads = -threads 5 and so on, just try it out :)

Hey,

To be honest i dont have a really good way to check it. But i can see that my CPU usage is running on 4-5% before opening CS and 100% when I open it. I check that in my AMD software, Adrenalin edition.

What does task manager say?

This sadly doesn't do much since the game doesnt utilize those "virtual" threads and only the physical cores, so anyone has 6 cores and 12 threads the game barely will use 6 cores...

Thanks for the comment. Do you got any good suggestions of an updated one?

And you dont see anything i can do just to improve my FPS drops? im all in for lower quality but my testing shows that the better quailty the better FPS

Hey!

-threads can be a good step. But I would also consider to try increase the quality. That will make your GPU run higher. You should get that GPU run at 100% to get the full potential out of it. That will hopefully get some load off your CPU. That works for me so why not give it a shot :)

What’s your monitors refresh rate? Just cap at 75fps if it’s 60

Crank up the resolution. If at native, use Nvidia's SSAA in their control panel.
