Is aiming for the head even worth it?
I have been practicing for quite some time to get better at the game, and progress is slow but ensuring. I have lately been exercising trigger discipline (saving ammunition and aiming for the head) but I find it rather difficult due to the apparent inconsistency of the game itself; headshots feel to be so random that actively trying to attain them is pointless. Aiming for the body gets results but I feel that once I get to higher ranks that it will an archaic method as opposed to approaching for shots to the head. I tried studying the hitboxes, which are supposedly smaller than the previous iterations of Counter-Strike and the damage rates aswell. It appears that, if the head is too difficult to hit, the lower body is the best place to aim for. To conclude, I want advice on aiming and acheiving headshots for when I get into games demanding greater skill from people with prowess and experience.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT : Also, could somone provide some advice for pistol rounds? I don't do too well on those.

Never ever spray with pistol! Make every shot count! Dont run and spray.. When you spray, pull down your crosshair. I have seen many people when spraying shooting over the enemy.. Practice on a wall.. Try to spray on the same spot..

Maybe not in late-game when everyone has low-health

p250 or bust if you don't trust yourself.

Have you checked how many bullets (for each gun) it takes to get a kill to the chest?
Have you practicing spraying that amount of bullets at targets at head hight, (at varying distances) while strafe stepping?
I only really try to one tap, when pre-firing spots, and at long range where the head is just too small.
Cause it sounds like you are trying to one tap heads at close distances?

This http://csgo.gamebanana.com/maps/168139 is one of the best maps for training aim/reflex and burst/spray. You should definitly download it. (You need to noclip at the start of the map to get upwards onto the training area)
It still is the best and most important part. Keep aiming for head!
Watch pro games (Especially now Dream Hack Winter, look at twitch). Although they also spray a lot, they often makes beautiful HS they aimed for. Especially some1 like shoxie.

It is worth it.

When you can consistently spray a "kill burst" at head hight, when instanly stopping your momentum in movement for all directions.... thats when you add a crouch at the end for a panic spray or for the longer range targets, to help get them extra bullets on tartget.

Try to break down gameplay moments, place afew bots(static) in key places on different maps.
i use bind "p" "bot_place"

just keep playing and you will eventually learn to "feel" each weapon and control its recoil spread accordingly... i suggest you start a private match and get an ak, stand in front of a wall and spray, observe the spread and how the recoil is.... you can manage it by pulling down, start the pull down slow and finish fast.... make sure you are completely still when firing, you cannot hit anything while moving at a distnace without luck...

for the pistol round i like to buy my trusty p250 it has low recoil and you can really spam it, just rmember to keep a steady crosshair at head level and shoot fast but slow... dont spam aas fast as you can but dont shoot really slow either, watch the tracers and adjust your aim accordingly... i find the p250 shoots a little low and to the right, but when spamming you will still need to pull down slighly if standing still

... and always aim for the head, it may seem easier not to at first but you will eventually learn it and get more consistent and your gameplay will improve exponentially

I know my comment is going to be short, but honestly I have started training with aiming head levels. They are amazing. Just aiming for the head at Dust II in lower tunnel is great. Trust me with an AK, learning to aim the head is a must. Watch the dreamhack summer highlights on youtube. NiP is a great example.

Learning to aim for headshots is the key to be good at this game. It's not that inconsistent that you seem to think. Shoot in small bursts and learn how to controll the recoil when you're spraying. When it comes to pistols you should realy be conservative. It's better to do controlled shots than emptying your mag into the wall behind the enemy.
There's some aim maps with headshot only, that help you get better.
