An error occurred while updating Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (corrupt update files) Please help...
I'll start with specs:

OS - Windows 7 Pro (64 bit) SP1
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9450 (2.66Ghz quad core)
6gb Ram (DDR2)
Nvidia GeForce 9600GT (Was SLI but had to remove the second card due to a heat sink fault)

**(If you need more info please ask)

So this computer is getting on a bit now but it does the job. Still plays most other games (like L4d2, Portal2, Sniper Elite V2 to name a few.

Steam have told me to get lost so I'll post the entire conversation here:

I recently downloaded the 4gb update for cs go. Once I had done that I found that, although the update had finished downloading it would not install properly.

I found this fix and it worked.

http://www.firewallcs.net/forums/showthread.php?17868-CS-GO-stuck-at-100-No-problemo

I then started to play; as soon as I tried to play on competitive mode, I was kicked from the server on account of having corrupted puk files. I deleted all of these and then downloaded them again only to find that it is stuck on 100 % update again. It will let me run cs go if I run it through the steam apps folder so it is a fault with steam.

I have tried the fix in the link above about 5 times now and had no success. I have also tried completely uninstalling both steam and cs go and started from scratch; neither with any success.

Please help me fix this issue. It is extremely annoying. A suggestion for the puk files issue would also be appreciated.

I am running Windows Vista 32 bit.
4gb ram
2.8ghz processor
2x Nvidea 9600GT running sli
500gb HD

(YES I KNOW THE SPECS ARE DIFFERENT HERE... JUST KEEP READING)

Kind regards,

Tom

Here's an update on the things I have tried.

I have tried:
1. Deleting blob files, config.vdf, app manifest files and cs go folder, then installing directx and running it all again.

2. Uninstalling cs:go and all associated files through deletion of all games in the common folder.

3. Copying over all the files from the 730 folder in the downloading folder and restarting and veriying.

4. As above but also deleting the downloading folder afterwards.

5. Verifying cache (literally 50 times)

6. Deleting the appcache folder and restarting

7. Uninstalling steam.

8. Uninstalling steam and saving 'steam/steamapps/common' to a different place, reinstalling steam and copying them back in then verifying.

9. Updating all drivers

10. Individually testing each stick of ram in different slots using windows memory diagnostic tool.

11. chkdsk.

12. Completely removing and uninstalling all anti virus using removal software.

13. Running as administrator.

14. TBC!

Though the game runs if I run it through the csgo exe file in the common directory and its now in the right directory STEAM WILL STILL NOT RECOGNISE ITS EXISTENCE AND WILL TRY TO DOWNLOAD ANOTHER COPY INTO THE DOWNLOADING FOLDER. When I try to verify game cache it just seems to check one file (or does it very quickly) and states that everything is 100% ok.

The only thing in the counter-strike global offensive folder in 'steam/steamapps/common' is a file called install.vdf

The game runs if it isn't through steam; just to make that abundantly clear.

Now also tried a full format and update of OS. Also tried to download files on a different computer and use the steam backup and restore function to transfer them across.

I tried to copy my entire steam folder from another computer. I thought this had cracked it but then when I validated it found 5 files that needed to be downloaded again. I then had the same problem where steam would not finish updating the game. I'm not sure how to find which files are corrupt. Seems strange that completely replacing the entire steam folder would still result in the same errors.

please help me...

I've also tried updating all my drivers using a program called driver genius. That didn't work either.

Hello Tom,

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

We apologize for the delay.

Please exit Steam and go to the folder called C:\Program Files\Steam\ (this is the default location for a Steam installation - if you set a different installation directory, you will need to browse to it).

Delete all of the files in this folder except:

- \Steamapps\ and \Userdata\ folders

- Steam.exe (this file is listed as an application and features the black and white Steam logo)

Restart your computer.

Then, launch Steam.exe from within the Steam installation folder, and not from a pre-existing shortcut.

With Steam running, re-test the original issue.

Note: This process will not affect your currently installed games.

If the issue persists, make sure your network is optimized for Steam by following the guide below:

Title: Troubleshooting Network Connectivity
Link: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1456-EUDN-2493

Please follow all suggestions in this article, even if your network appears to be functioning correctly.

Thanks for the reply. This didn't work.

I've checked network and there should be no problems. Steam plays every other game fine.

Any other suggestions?

Hello Tom,

Please try the following:

Exit Steam entirely.

Browse to your Steam installation (Usually C:\Program Files\Steam\)

Rename the "steamapps" folder to "old_steamapps"

Re-launch Steam and re-install the game.

Once the installation is complete, test the issue.

If this resolves the issue, you may copy the new files into the "old_steamapps" folder and rename it to "steamapps" to restore your other games without re-downloading.

If the issue is not resolved, you can rename the folder back to avoid having to re-install other games.

Also, please follow the instructions linked below to provide a diagnostic report for your system.

Title: How to run and submit MSINFO32 Info reports
URL: http://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=1376-WTZN-9132

Note: Please make sure your operating system is updated fully before running the report.

Please find MSinfo32 report attached. Still encountering same issue despite all suggested fixes and many more. Also recently purchased new ram and ran diagnostics on HD; nothing showing up.

So last night I managed to get Counter Strike running which was great. I installed on a different computer and then copied the whole steam folder over and replaced the one on my computer.

I then tried to join a server at which point I was kicked because of my pak files differing from the servers.

I validate and it tells me 7 files need to be replaced. I wait for it to finish and I end up with the "an error occured whilst updating csgo (corrupt update files)". I then replace the pak files with the ones from my laptop and I can run it again but I still get the same error when I try to join any match making game and some piblic servers. I have tried validating cache twice. The first time 8 files failed to validate, the second 7 files.

At least I can actually get on the game now!!

Kind regards,

Tom

I start steam and verify cache of csgo and it finds files that won't verify so it downloads them again. The files get stuck in the downloading folder in steamapps, so I copy them into the right directory manually.

I then restart steam and run cs go again. It's working but I can't play matchmaking without being kicked because my .pak files differ from the servers. I then verify again and find that there are files that need to be.... and so the circle goes round

15 Message by you on Mon, 18th Aug 2014 1:52
interesting that those files won't download correctly no matter what I do; even if its from my laptop. I've tried everything!!!

Retested memory using memtest and checked hard drive. All fine. What is going on with this game?!?!

Hello Tom,

Please try completely removing Steam and re-installing. You may want to print out these instructions for quick reference.

1. Write down your Steam Account name and password - you will need them to log back into Steam once you have reinstalled
2. Logout of Steam
3. Exit Steam
4. If you currently have any Steam games installed that you would like to keep, please copy the Steamapps folder from C:\Program Files\Steam to your desktop or another directory.
5. Delete the Steam folder in the default location C:\Program Files\Steam
6. Hit windows key + r ( run at the start menu ) and type regedit
7. Delete HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Valve (or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Valve on 64-bit Windows)
8. Reboot your computer.
9. Download and install a fresh copy of the Steam installer from http://store.steampowered.com/about/
10. Run the installer and re-test the Steam client.

no luck I'm afraid.

Any further suggestions? This isn't an isolated incident. This is surely a developer issue?

Thanks for your help.

Hello Tom,

Please re-test this issue on a different computer that is connected to the same network.

21 Message by you on Wed, 27th Aug 2014 22:26
Error does not occur on a different computer connected to the same network. Unfortunately the other computer isn't good enough to run it properly.

So the error lies with this computer somewhere.

Hello Tom,

Please try reformatting your system drive. Ensure that you make copies of any information or files that you wish to keep.

After updated Windows and all of your hardware drivers, reinstall a fresh copy of Steam to your system drive and test the issue again.

Tried a full reformat. Again. Still no joy.

It seems logical that this is hardware or game related; it seems ridiculous that csgo is the only game I get this issue with. I can play all others!

Wow. Thanks for nothing.

//end of Steam saga.

Since then I've been able to play by completely copying a steam folder created on another computer over to this PC, however it will only work on servers where pure is set to 1.

I've also tried installing on an external hard drive to make sure it's not my HDD.

To diagnose the issue I've tried to look at logs but because it's copied over from another PC the logs won't update.

So I decided that tonight, with the new update I would try a completely fresh uninstall and reinstall and ended up back at square 1. Now I can't get the game to update again. On a positive note my logs are working again so I will post the most recent lines below:

When I try to create more steam support tickets for this issue they are deleted... Apparently no one has an answer for me.

having the same issue... did you find a fix already?? if I find one ill tell u

My guess is there's a RAM housing issue with my computer. Over the last year I have literally spent days researching this and trying fixes. The only way I was able to get it to work was by installing steam on an old laptop and then copying the whole steam folder over and replacing the old one. This allowed me to access some public servers but if I tried to play matchmaking it would boot me out with the pak files error. Every time I checked the pak files there would be different ones that were corrupted. I was able to start playing again by replacing these pak files with a spare copy I had but never on match making. All the threads I've read any where about this issue point to faulty RAM. I tried a new operating system and a full reformat; I've uninstalled steam at least 10 times over the last couple of years thinking 'maybe this time it will work!' I bought 8GB of new RAM; baring in3 mind this is DDR2 RAM making sure it was compatible with my system. Everything else plays.

It's so frustrating because I've had nothing from steam support as you can see above. The fact that my computer can play the game comfortably is even more annoying! I just play on my Mrs's iMac now.

Having bought the game you'd think that valve would try to do something to help those of us who are having this issue.

Let me know if you have any luck :)

well I bought 2gb of new RAM latetly but it seems to work perfectly. Still trying to find the issue . I did the same method with the downloading on a other laptop and then copying it. but then it seems to download a whole other copy of the game but when i restarted it said it had 3gb already done... strange stuff this. Something to note is that i installed it on linux on the same pc and was abled to play it all fine... Tell me if you find anything :)

well i'm not reading all that but i get the jist and ... uhm.. stupid as this sounds has anyone ever suggested replacing your cmos battery ? seems like an awful lot of config and hardware changes and reboots on a mainboard that's seen some miles..... also why are you saving your folder in a different location and then putting it back after steam installs a fresh copy? yea nobody wants to download all their custom ♥♥♥♥ again but thats the only way to verify fiel integrity on the fly..

bleh

sucks either way
