PC slow after 64-bit upgrade?????
Hey guys, so I currently own about three different PCs. they all have different specs and I have been working on them all for some time now. This one that I am talking about now is one that I want to turn into a gaming computer but have run into some difficulties. I upgraded it to Windows 7 64-bit and started seeing problems. First of all, this computer was amazing at 32-bit. Really fast even though it had an old processor and not much RAM. Now, at the 64-bit upgrade, it runs way slower than before. It is even affecting my internet. I tested my internet speed on 32-bit and I got about 60mbps. Now I'm getting around 20. That's a huge difference. Not only that, I tested it in-game and it runs really slow. I recently got a new graphics card. If anyone could help me with this, please say so. I will take any suggestions that are logical and I encourage everyone to say something. Doesn't matter what it is. I want to figure this out! By the way, my system specs for this PC are:
Processor: Intel(r) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU @3.00 GHz
RAM: 3.00 GB
System Type: 64-bit operating System
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
If anyone needs anymore info, just say. Thanks :)

The Core 2 Duos support 64-bit (and I have a processor just like yours), so it's not the processor.

You can try reseating the graphics card or RAM sticks to see if that's the problem, maybe the RAM sticks got loose while plugging in your new graphics card.

If whoever gave you the Windows 7 64-bit cd got it from a torrent site and the uploader didn't have a lot of reputation, it might have been infected and it's part of a botnet, which will explain the slower network speed. This would be very easy to test for with the open-source program Wireshark, so don't worry about this.

If the Windows 7 cd came with a lot of pre-installed bloated junk, you can go to Run and type msconfig to disable all the crap that autostarts when you boot the pc and runs in the background.

When you open up the Task Manager, is there anything using up the CPU resources?

If nothing above works, try reinstalling or try a different Windows 7 cd.

Was this PC a prebuilt PC?

Yes. It has always been a 32- bit but I decided to upgrade it so I could do more things on it.

The only reason one needs to upgrade to a 64-bit computer is to be able to use more RAM...

This was a complete waste of time IMO.

Well, when upgrading a PC to 64-bit when the PC was originally 32-bit can cause a lot of issues with drivers. That's probably what's happening. I don't exactly know how to explain it but I've run across tons of problems with upgrading a prebuilt pc to a higher bit OS. My advice would be to uninstall each driver one at a time (keep backups) and see which one resolves your performance issue. Then try and find a workaround.

Add more RAM, enables computer to get a better processor. I think I want something much better than a duel core processor.
Go back to 32 bit. You have absolutely no need for 64 bit.

On Windows, sure, because most Windows programs are sadly still 32-bit only. This is why there's little difference right now on Windows.

However, 64-bit code is faster than 32-bit code.

Already working on that. Thanks for the advice.

If it still doesn't work after this, I'll consider it xD I do have a little use for it. Like someone else said, I want more RAM and I want to add more things to it.

This PC is older than most modern PCs right now, but it is still considered "good" compared to others because It was the best of it's time about 7 years ago. Model Number is: xw4600
