It's rarer. Like an antique. The older it gets and rarer, the price will go up. Hope this answered your question!

Well I understand that I guess, but the real question is when would someone ever see it ? It's like showing off something that is never seen lol :p

Go into any game and type Status and you'll see an amazing STEAM ID. But, people who claim to have a 1 digit Steam Account is a false statement as they are reservered to Valve workers (Unless of course the employee breaks the ToS). 2 digits on the other hand can be obtainable by non-employees and Valve Workers. Any Valve Worker can have any ID [meaning 1 digit, 2 digits, etc. You get the point.]

Selling low digit steam ID was already a thing on cs 1.6. At this time, there was no knife skin available, so people had to find another way to become FPS hipsters. The Steam ID was used to register on competitive leagues and checked by the opposite team at the beginning of each match to make sure there was no substitute.

I guess it is still the case.

Steam id doesn't really mean anything if the pros are bottom fragging while the noobs carry.

So typing status while in game is the only time someone would see it? People pay hundreds of dollars for that?

I suppose so. It was very popular back in the golden days of 1.6, but I doubt anyone cares about digits now-a-days since people care about CS:GO skins and knives.

To a certain extent it insulates you from cheating accusations. I've had plenty of experiences where someone accuses me and then another guy points out that I have a 5 digit ID as though it makes it impossible.

There's a fair amount of logic to this; people are unlikely to risk an ancient, valuable account being destroyed by cheating. That doesn't make it impossible, but it does make sense.
