Although another explanation is the CSGO item server uses pseudorandom numbers, like numbers in a very long list that go in a "random" order and every time someones opens a case it goes a tick down the list and it could be something good based on which number is next. So it could choose every say, 1000 cases, to give a knife to a person.
Granted, I am just theorycrafting here and for all we know they could use actual chickens pecking at buttons to decide case openings.

Btw I opened awp boom stattrak ft in one of my first cases (about 1-5). I believe it's random.
