WASD or ESDF?
I've always used ESDF because I'm a hipster, and i realize most of you use WASD because its default. What I want here is this: If you use WASD, what is your reason for doing so (other than the fact that its defualt, of course. I'm looking for its advantages), if you use ESDF, what are your thoughts on it and why don't you use WASD, and if you've got an even less common setup for movement, explain it!

I am a classic old school player from way back (like CS beta 6.1) and I've never felt the need to switch to ESDF instead of using WASD. Maybe some of us fell just more comfortable about the way our fingers lay on ESDF but not me. For me the advantage of WASD is about the ease to reach numbers and ease to press the crtl key with pinky (I actually use my pinky's first joint from my hand to press this key). That way I don't lose my finger orientation when I crouch.

I put my left hand in the configuration you described, seemed too close to my mouse hand (right). assumed you used the mouse on the other side of the keyboard and therefore were left handed.

Yeah know what you mean, but i just adjust the distance to whatever feels right, some ppl cant get their head round it, lol tbh me either, god knows i've tried WASD but it feels soo uncomfortable, the extra spacing between forward and back means i can move so much easyier, it flows...each to their own i suppose.:csgoskull:

ESDF does have a few advantages namely the positioning of your fingers allows you to use all the keys around ESDF as hotkeys for various things

this is mostly relevant in MMORPG games though
i have my 'extra' keys bound to grenades.

Q = frag, A = Flash, Z = Smoke, X = Molly, C = Decoy, ESDF = movement, T = Reloard, G = use, W = Buy menu, R = C4, mousewheel up = primary weapon, Mousewheel down = Pistol, Middlemouse = Knife, mouse 4 = Crouch (which is bad, it promotes panic crabwalking, ill need to change it), mouse 5 = PTT. Oh, and then tab = scoreboard, Shift = walk.

I don't want to sound like an ass but.. having R, wich is the seemingly nearest key to your walking keys, set to the most useless thing (pulling out the c4 in 200ms or 1sec does not make a difference in 99.9% of the situations where you have the c4, wich, in addition, is not that often..), seems to me.. ahm.. pretty stupid..

when I look at your settings, the only thing that could possibly be useful would be the grenades but if you play 10+ (or whatever) rounds with grenades you will be able to pull them out with a near to non existent delay..

if you want a tip: go look up the settings acknowledged pros use and try to understand why.. I don't know what setup they use but i'm rather confident, that it's not too different from the default..

Last statement: Valve is not stupid.. If there would be an obvious advantage to any ESDF setup, they would have implemented it.. if only as an pre-set alternative or sth like that. Don't waste too much time on the setup and inverst it rather in learning to become better with whatever setup you have.

To your first point with my R keybind: I actually have trouble hitting that key, for some reason, so thats why i put it to something i hit slightly infrequently. And I've been using this setup a lot longer than i've been playing CSGO, on literally every game i play that i can rebind keys, I'm not willing or going to change as i'm very consistent with my current setup (besides my crouch keybind). I was just curios as to what you guys use. And the reason WASD is common is because Quake (or something similar) started doing WASD, and nobody dares to stray from the norm of our overlord, and its just become stardard. Similar to how the united states presidents only ran for 2 terms until FDR: there was no rule or reason other than set precedent.

I use what was suggested to me for 1.6, which is weird. Move forward/back is mouse 1 and mouse 2, and I shoot with the left control key.

Arrow keys are better anyway because they register faster than WASD.
RODT 20/mai./2014 às 17:08

not on my Black Widow Ult 2013; if you have a keyboard that works like that, you need a new one.

only thing i change from the defaults in CS:GO is the voice chat button from K to mouse4. I was playing HL2DM on ESDF only to be able to put gravity gun on W and magnum on Q, reload becomes T in this case because movement keys are shifted and reload is used alot so shift that for more efficent use of muscle memory coming from prior WASD experience

I have always used WSAD because it was default and it is what I learned to play with, but I have always wanted to adjust my binds to use ESDF or even RDFG so my hand can be more towards the center of the keysboard.

I sometimes have issues with comfort since I have to play with my arms so far apart and sometimes I will hit my keyboard with my mouse while moving it because the keyboard is as far to the left as possible for my reach. If I was using ESDF or RDFG it would be a little better.

I would have to remap my entire keyboard though and then relearn my binds. I wish that I had started playing with ESDF or RDFG from the beginning.

Technically speaking, if you've got the dexterity to do so, TFGH is the optimal setup, as you've got access to the most keys at once, though its pointless to have that many, as you'll run out of things to bind.
