Well I can say that I keep jumping out of my place with the real ones xD
Other than being very often called for WH ingame xD
One can almost see everybody through the walls xD
Honestly :D:

Other problem is up and down locations, but even 7.1 cant fix that as up/down sound is terrible in source. (Funny we still dont have any up/down techs for sounds, not even for speakers)

But yeah, nothing cheap.
i tell you, i can literally "see through walls", as you say, with virtual surround. the effect is as strong as in real life. (as if a real person was standing behind you).
btw, if i understand it correctly, real surround sound can't be transfered with a standard 3-pin 3.5 jack? how many ports does it require to run? i mean my PC has 6 audio ports, 2 in and 4 out: L-out, SS-out, CS-out and RS-out. so 7.1 would definitely fit in (i guess subwoofer goes into CS?). but other computers, such as laptops, don't have that many ports and have only one input and one output port. so for that you need to buy an external sound card too, and that further increases the price. i mean, you can buy *ONLY* the external sound card and have virtual surround with any decent headphones...

I got optical cable from internal integrated sound card (realtek HD) into external soundcard (Sharkoon X-tatic pro)

And then it goes over 9 pin into headphones.

Everything was included and in price with the headphones.

Microphone goes over USB by the way.

normally, 5.1 requires atleast 3 jacks, but there are many other ways.
One optical cable is sufficient, if your speakers/headphones support it.

TEAC HP-7D USB 2.0 5.1 with Mic

Full 360 degree soundscape - Frequency Range: 20 Hz-20 kHz - HD True Sound Experience - Therefore it presents real 5.1 channel surround sound effects for DVD movies, action games or music.

My cheap 30 EUR headset works better like any other more expensiv but poor other.
If you want good quality sound, I would go for an actual headphone not some overpriced "Gaming Headset"
Buy a nice Headset like something from sennheiser for example. then buy a 20 dollar clip on mic.
Steelseries Siberia V2

$20 is way too much for a microphone...

not really. a good separate mic sometimes cost more than a "gaming" headset.
Don't buy steelseries headset, It's good but it wont last long.
Not even a year my left side is going off sometimes

where you pulling the mic in and out all the time? because that moves around the wires in there, and can wear them down. i try to pull the mic in and out as little as possible.

i'm not saying that expensive microphones don't exist... there is just no point in buying them. i mean it's not like you're recording high quality music with it... talking doesn't require a good microphone AT ALL, the only important thing is that it works well. just don't buy those acme cheap'os from the nearest grocery store, the contacts start breaking down after a few weeks. basically, if it has a 2 year warranty, you're gonna be ok.
