Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) - VAC safe?
Hey all,

I decided to likely take the plunge and get involved on twitch. Open Broadcaster Software seems like a good solution for me, but of course, I'm a little wary of running 3rd party programs in the background while gaming.

Have any folks around here been using OBS for a long while now and can vouch for it? I've seen many positive testimonials elsewhere, but I figured that there would be no harm in asking the community myself. For all I know, VAC is going to be finnicky a few updates from now and ban all OBS users, but is that not even remotely a possibility? I'm not very tech-savvy, so I'm hoping some of you can put my mind at ease. Thanks!

yes it is vac safe
OBS will not get you banned
OBS has resulted in VAC bans in the past. Steam Tech Support recommends you "refrain from using third-party applications" to avoid VAC bans.

its not a game altering program
OBS is completely safe many streamers such as myself use it
if you need any help with setup lmk
If OBS result in a VAC ban, you should also be aware that steam support will NOT reverse the ban, regardless on how legit the software is.
They MAY whitelist the software to prevent further VAC bans.

Check Steams list of guranteed Safe software instead, like fraps and such.
YES fraps cost money to use, but its a disadvantage you have to accept if you don't want to risk getting VAC banned.

obs doesnt inject anything into the game so it will not get picked up and isnt a hack all it does is record the data being sent to your monitor thro dx

OBS's Game Capture mode hooks into the game.

If you don't want to be VAC banned you should remove third-party applications from your computer.
I've never heard of anyone getting VAC banned for using OBS. Can anyone link to a source where someone has been banned from using that software?
ive been using obs for a long while now and never heard and or seen any one get banned via it
its safe trust me www.twitch.tv/wrongwayup if you dont belive ill show you
Use FRAPS or Twitch streaming (Via Nvidia Shadowplay) instead, even if it cost money. Thats guranteed to be VAC safe.
fraps isnt streamable and nvdia shadow is the same and isnt a good program tbf and if hes on amd he cant use it
Shadowplay has a twitch streaming plugin. So you can stream in near realtime to Twitch.

You really should not use this either. Any third-party software should be disabled or removed from your computer to avoid bans.

Lex: Twitch Shadowplay Streaming is something embedded in your graphics drivers.
It cant be removed without removing the graphics drivers.

Thus totally VAC safe since Twitch shadowplay will extract the image data at the graphics driver level and export it to twitch.
Twitch Shadowplay can only be used if you have a Nvidia Card with Twitch Shadowplay embedded.
Those is GTX 600 / GTX 600M / GTX 600MX , or any higher.

VAC has no possibility to see if you are using functions of your graphics card, and IF any function CAN be used for cheating and be "banned", then Steam Support WILL inform about it in Steam forums AND Steam Support page.

In your case however, it seems like DOTA2 has it own non-VAC anticheat on top of VAC which does detect third party software. This can be triggered by anything, even if not hooked into the game, thats why they only have 30 days suspension instead of permanent, because they know it can "misfire" or "mistrigger".

If it requires you run a third-party application to handle the streaming or to handle the interfacing with the hardware then it should not be used. I assume it has a client which connects to Twitch. This should not be used.
