The realistic, sporty or vibrant skins, I prefer them to look like they've been shipped straight from the manufacturer and picked out of a metal, padded, air-tight briefcase.
For typical "outlaw" weapons or camouflage skins, I like them to have the salvaged look. Like your faction is purchasing weapons from people who loot the newly dead. Or like it used to belong to someone who went on long adventures with it. It's been stolen, had its functionality restored and left on a rack until someone came with enough cash.
