You can use a SMART utility to read if there are any issues, or do a full chkdsk and see if there's bad sectors. There's also a plethora of HDD utilities out there to test it. That's my best guess.
Only other thing could be your video card is overheating a bit, but that seems unlikely if it's only happening during death sequences.
