Changing player icons to colors other than the default 5?

So a guy in a game I was in was able to change his player icon (the color of his dot on the mini-map) to any number of color shades. As far as I know the command associated with that is cl_color #, but that is limited to 0-4 and only works with the default 5 colors. Any ideas on how he worked his color magic?

I've seen people do this to a lot recently but there seems to be a very big lack of information about this. I'm curious about this as well, but I only know as much as you do :/

what im not to sure what you mean by player icon color how do you change that

It's the color of your and other people's circles on the minimap, it shows up in various other places as well.
Also cl_color picks a prefered color that the game will try to give you in matches, it doesn't change the color while in a match.
