On the other hand I've been using the esdf setup for at least seven years without problems and I prefer it over the old wasd config. It can't hurt to try.
Here is everything you need, just back up your current config and replace what's needed.

Why? Cos this was the setup i used 14 years ago when Quake III Arena came to the dreamcast and have just never got out the habit. just saw this setup, now i know what ill be doing for the rest of the holiday xd
But like you said. Can try it out. If does not work revert back.
i would say you just need to look it up. normally you can just take the folder and copy it and put into a dfferent location all together. even a different hard drive.
i agree you can reach a lot of spots with the pinky. but then why not move another space over. moving one space using e instead of w only opens up for a few more buttons. if you get used to it you can probably move to the center of keyboard or even more towards the right side. but this way other buttons are also closer to reach for your hand.
i suppose 1 good thing about maybe getting used to using e is that you are then in position to type. having your index on the f key like you normally do. for me i dont mind my w just used to it. and for pinky having the bigger buttons like tab, shift, etc are easy to hit. there is also getting a gaming pad which you can add shift keys to. for me, i programed mine (not using though at the moment) but i kept my movement keys for each shift as well. this way i can move while pushing the shift button and then just having my e, q tab etc buttons change.

To back it up just copy and paste the file somewhere where you'll remember to find it. You can edit the file with WordPad. There are probably guides on this subject.
Haven't read the other comments, but GTR plays RDFG as his setup, and I do it too, even since I found out. You swap out shift for z if you have small hands like me, and it's not really a big change.
