the truth about opening cases on a new account
It may all be speculation, but from my experience and that of my friends from Dota 2 and Counter Strike, it appears that you'd have a higher chance of landing a nice item if your account is new or you have just spend $$$ for the first time.

The reasoning behind that is once you start spending money on the game, Valve qualifies you as a "spender" in the sense that you'd keep opening cases whether or not you land a nice skin. New accounts, or new spenders, are given better drops to entice them to spend more $ in the future by making them believe the gamble is worth it.

This is my experience:
- Dota 2 treasures opened on smurf accounts have ALWAYS given me better drops. People who open Dota chests can confirm that.
- have unboxed a knife within my first 5 cases EVER, then haven't had a knife in over 150 cases
- Have "watched" over 100 games of competitive cs go eligible for drops, did not receive anything. One game, however, I watched logged in on my smurf, and got a ESL Cologne drop IMMEDIATELY.

You may call it speculation, I'll call it smart, behavioral oriented discrimination from Valve in their attempt to maximize profits.

Cheers!
