Ghosting Isn't Cheating? - A Community Discussion
READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE YOU COMMENT AND MAKE YOURSELF LOOK STUPID FOR NOT READING!

I was playing casual today, and this guy (not going to put names here) made this ridiculous shot through the wall that killed me. I instantly thought "wall hacks?" When I questioned him about it, to my surprise, he said he was ghosting!

Note: Ghosting is the act of using a spec cam (Usually a friend's) to see where the enemy team is positioned so you can easily eliminate them.

I don't play Casual often, but apparently this must be common practice, as he and another person on his team were trying to put me down and speaking slander towards me even though I tried to make the comparison that Ghosting was no better than Wall Hacking. "Different Method, Same Result" I told them. But they were obstinate, holding firm the idea that if you don't want to ghost, than you shouldn't play Casual.

This is unsettling to me. In a community so vicious towards cheaters, how can they just brush off Ghosting as nothing more than how you play the game. Now I know it is only possible to do this in Casual, but even so, it presents a pressing issue about our community as a whole.

What's YOUR opinion? Do you think ghosting is a huge concern and ruins the game, is perfectly ok, or is a non-issue?

There's anti-ghosting measures in competitive, which is what matters atm.
Casual isn't cared for at all, and not worth wasting your time in unless you are trying to reach rank 3.

(To answer your question: Yes, ghosting is considered cheating imo)

I understand that, but even still, Casual is a big part of the game and where alot of players spend their time.

It's clearly "cheating" by definition. It's just not against the rules.

The easy answer is that it's just casual. Valve cares as much about casual as they care about people complaining on this forums. Why? Because the players don't care about casual.

Casual is intended to just screw around and play the game, if you are looking for something else, you're playing the wrong game mode.

Casual is casual. Noone cares about anything, people play it without consequences ( except VAC bans, you can still get those in VAC secured servers) so you won't really cheat, but you can ghost. Ghosting isn't cheating, just advantage/

It's not a complaint, it's a discussion. I think we can put you down under the category "non-issue".

Wasn't saying it's a complaint, nor am I saying anything negative about this post, just making a simile. I assume you put me on a tone that I didn't intend. Just simply saying Valve/the community don't care about the fairness of casual.

Most ghosters aren't that accurate to just wallbang you succesfully; It's very likely you met a wallhacker and he played it off as ghosting.
When I was leveling up a smurf I saw an obvious wallhacker, specced him and he was without doubt toggling, tracing people... After I reported him, I called him out on it, and he said the same ♥♥♥♥. "I'm ghosting, my friend gives info! I'm actually SMFC smurf"...
BS ofcourse, I could easily tell by his gamesense he wasn't actually, and just from how he traced through walls it was clear as day. (Next time I logged into the smurf I got a ban notification; and he was the only one I reported on the account).

Yeah, but when you don't care about something, nothing is going to change. And to be honest, I think it would change for the better if Valve (wishful thinking) introduced some sort of counter measure toward ghosting in casual. Thanks for your thoughts though, I appreciate it. :)

Easy solution is to just black screen dead players, I had that in an fps game in the past, can't remember which one though, but as others said, it doesn't matter if you win or lose in casual, it's just practice for other game modes after all.

I think everyone is pretty much correct about the community not taking Ghosting as seriously in Casual. This game is largely loved for the Competitive scene which has some form of regulation regarding what can and can't be seen and shared with teammates.

With that said, Ghosting always has been a bit looked down upon in various games in various scenarios by some people, but overall it's been turning into a non-issue in most games. Heck, even the callouts we do in Competitive when we die (ie. "He's at Long. I lit him 63!") were looked down upon years ago by some people in other games as being unfair when voice comms weren't built into every game and only the clans has voice through external programs. This meant you couldn't play as a random and just surprise a clan guy on his own server in an FPS and kill him and keep your camping spot. You had to hustle and run to another location and fake out the guy who was calling -- just like we do currently in Competitive.
