mostly in the title, how does it (not) work? I understand Valve dropped support for MM (and stupidly enough for inventory and even more idiotically for server browser), but what seems weird is that even inviting people to your lobby is ridiculously broken.

I'm not expecting a flawless experience by any means, but we literally can't invite people without doing a LOT of messing around with going online/offline, restarting game, and so on. it's completely arbitrary as well, like sometimes we go offline/online ONCE and it works, and other times we've had to restart 4 times and go on/offline 10 times.

I would love it if somebody had a consistent way to make lobbies, aside from dedicated servers obviously.

When Valve did release CS2. overtime they did shut down all of the APIs that CSGO did use with it. So, if you have the older game installed. it's just a skeleton as MM, skins, Steam functions were all dependent on the official Valve APIs.

the "old" (or whatever they provide anyway) is available via one of the betas for CS2, check out the cs legacy beta.

thing is, I get them shutting down the MM and inventory API, but the weird part is that it sometimes works. it's not never, and it's not always, but it's SOMETIMES. it still lets me connect to other players (weird that that's half functional, but anyway), but only after fiddling around with the go offline/online buttons and restarting.
well I guess now the old-fashioned way, the way we all did it in classic CS and CS:S, is the way to go — host a proper dedicated server and connect to it either via connect (ip) or by adding the ip address to favorite servers in the server browser.

it's weird though that the api only sometimes works in csgo, they didn't change anything regarding player invitation and lobby logic, the only thing that's different in cs2 is the absence of voice chat in the lobby and networked player main menu display

fair enough I suppose, but I'm sure you're aware of how much of an extra pain in the bum setting up a proper dedicated server for likely a one-off 2v2 / hide and seek / whatever dumb things we wanna do is, especially when taking into account having to juggle old workshop maps(does the old workshop even work anymore? I never bothered with it, still having fun on the 50 something maps I have from back in the day).

I'm still perplexed by the fact that it only sometimes works, though. I'd understand if it was completely dead, with people being forget to connect to servers via console, but the way it is now it's really stupid. either way, it's not as if them providing a proper P2P API is that difficult, they do it for ""legitimate"" spacewar copies without much work lmao.
