Terrible performance - FPS drops below 100 and frametime spikes
Am I the only one having issues with performance in this game? Whenever I play DM or Casual where there more 10+ people fighting I get sudden drops of FPS (often below 100) and frametime spikes witch makes it feel like playing on 60hz monitor, (it's super smooth when there's not many poeple, 300+ FPS) it brings me back to 2015 CSGO when i played on dual core Athlon and 2GB RAM.
I play on 4:3 lowest and my graphics card is RTX 4070s, CPU is Ryzen 7 5700x so i suppose it should be enough to get a playable experience. It's 200-300 FPS on average with drops to 90, frametime from 15 to 30ms on average. Situation seems to have gotten worse after I installed the game on new M.2 Samsung Evo 970.
Is anyone having the same issues?

This is your issue. CS2 is a easy game to run and get high FPS just like WoW. If you let your gpu make as many frames as it can you are going to spike temps. Even with my 7700xt in a 2004 game if you do not cap fps you will experience heat problems. Sadly people have fallen for too much marketing due to monitor refresh rates getting so high and influencers . Games like warzone i dont have to worry about FPS cap because my game naturally can only pull 160 fps. but in old easy to run games like this you cant let your high end GPUs just run wild and expect not to have issues. unless you have some great cooling setup that is.

That being said both my 5700X3D/7700XT and 5800X/6650XT run this game flawlessly at 165hrz and run very cool and no dropped frames.

lol CS2 is not an old game, CS:GO was and it could run even on 1000 fps flawlessly without issue. CS2 is a new game on new engine and yes, its easy to get a lot of fps but 1% lows are terrible when there is more people. My GPU is not overheating.

TRUE, the avg fps is fine its the lows and drops which make the game so bad

i just played full lobby DM on anubis and still get drops of FPS below 100 xD In the beginning of the match it was more like 180-300 but in the end it started dropping to 100 and less. It's unplayable, it has become like this only rencently, its not like its a lag spike, it drops to 90-100 fps and stays like this for a couple of seconds. The longer i play the worse it becomes.

happens to me all of the time
i have
i5 7400
gtx 1050 ti stable OC
16gb of ram and optimized win 11
i checked my Background apps and its all fine but the frame time of this game is just crap,
and the FSR wont increase a single FPS, the game is very demanding on cpu i hope they fix it somehow buy at least making it playable on this cpu i would rather play cs go then this , its not competitive, not yet

95% of performance issues are happening because people are STRESS TESTING their pc with unlocked framerate. (unlocked is for stress testing and/or benchmarking purposes only).

unlocked framerate is equal to driving a car in 1st gear and revving it to the max and then wondering why engine is overheating and it's still slow. your engine might be GOOD, but it still gives poor performance if you are misusing it.

even race car will overheat if you're hammering it in 1st gear with max revs.
computers are not designed to be under constant 100% load, but this is exactly what you are doing by setting unlocked fps.
even crypto mining is not as stressful to pc than running games with unlocked framerates.

to prove that i'm right, i can run CS2 in 4k with GTX 1080 and i get solid 60fps with NO stuttering and no lag.

altho i run it in 1440p as i'm not mad at my computer, i don't like frying my PC for no reason at all. 1440p keeps my GTX 1080 at a nice 20-30% usage and temp is like 45c, in computer terms .. that's taking a nap.

i don't know why some people even mention CPU, but i have i7 6700k and CPU usage is always below 20%, even with lot of background stuff running (steam, firefox, chrome, winamp, wireguard and sometimes some other stuff aswell). even some old dual-core can run CS2 just fine, because CPU is used for calculations, there's nothing to calculate in CS2. only ragdoll physics require calculations, but i think that's done by physx (GPU).

RAM is not important either. i have 16gb @ 3400mhz and it's not an issue. even with all the background stuff, my RAM usage is around 50% only. if i'd close everything on background, it would be around 3-4gb RAM usage, so CS2 takes only about 1-2 gb as windows takes about 1-2 gb. Also the way windows works, is that the more RAM you have, the more it uses. If you have only 4gb, then windows would conserve it more.
i'm 100% sure cs2 runs fine with 4gb RAM.

3 THINGS that can easily fix any poor performance:
1 - DO NOT run unlocked fps, limit your fps to what your monitor can support!
2 - enable fidelityFX super resolution and depending on your resolution, set it between performance -- quality. i have mine set to quality with 1440p resolution, image is crystal clear on 4k monitor.
3 - turn global shadows to low

THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER DO:
DO NOT force settings using nvidia or amd graphics control panel
DO NOT use console commands that are related to graphics
DO NOT use launch options that are related to graphics
DO NOT run game in window or borderless (fullscreen window) modes.
DO NOT minimize game while playing - this degrades performance and causes lag, stuttering or even crashes in any game - this is simply because of how windows works, windows prioritizes the program that is in focus, if you minimize, it means game loses focus and some other program is being prioritized. since cs2 uses about 2gb RAM, it takes a while for PC to get it back in focus, even if game is maximized, it doesn't mean it's fully operational. minimizing is worst thing you can do in games, just DON'T .. unless you enjoy crashes and stuttering. if you need to check internet or talk to friends, use overlay, that's what it's for.

Make sure game is running in native aspect ratio. my monitor is 16:9, so in my case only use 16:9 resolutions.

I need to make a video on this ... these topics make me wanna cry. i can run cs2 with GTX 1080 in 4k .. while you guys have RTX series cards and you complaining about bad performance .. i just have no words anymore ... cs2 runs smooth even on potato.

i can literally run it on my 15 year old dual-core with GTX 680 and i bet i'd still get smooth 60fps in 1080p.

so much nonsense packed in between half truths.

Reviving this as this is what I'm experiencing as well, and I went down a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ rabbit hole to try and narrow this problem down, because it felt like a hardware issue.

Specs:
5800X
3080TI
M.2 SSD
32GB ddr4

Visual settings:
Medium, but disabled upscaling so it runs at native 1440P.

Things I've done;
- Cleared the DirectX cache.
- Updated my Nvidia video configuration for CS2.
- Changed launch settings to include; -high -threads 9 -mat_queue_mode 2
- Reinstalled and verified files of the game.
- Checked the CPU temperature; they were fine, but to completely rule out any sort of thermal throttling, I replaced the thermal paste with liquid metal. During playing the max temp I now get is 69 degrees ( checked all cores to rule out hotspot issue), and the core clock would be stable at 4675Mhz, checked with afterburner. Game utilitisation of the CPU sits at around 35%.
- Checked the temperatures of my GPU; My hotspot was higher than I'd like, so replaced the thermal paste and thermal pads of my GPU. Temperatures while playing CS2 never exceeded 55 Degrees, hotspot reaches around 67 degrees, memory temp around 65, core clock stable at 1920Mhz, memory clock speed stable at 10300Mhz, checked with afterburner. Game utilisation of the GPU sits at around 50%.
- Tested with a second power supply to rule out a dodgy component.
- Tested with a second motherboard to rule out a dodgy component.
- Tested with 64GB of faster and different Ram to rule out a dodge component.

At this point, I know there isn't anything wrong with this machine. My benchmarks on 3DMark are in the top 15 percentile when comparing results with the same CPU and GPU.
Other games run at the expected frame rates when compared to game and GPU benchmarks. But after a while, my CS2 performance just degrades, and it feels like my mouse movements are underwater.

I'm tired boss. And I can't be bothered to try anything else.

i recommend capping FPS using Riva Tuner, it works. I upgraded the CPU to 7800x3d and the game still doesn't really run as it should xd The more you try to tweak it the worse it gets.
