There have been exploits both from files downloaded from community servers (that would remote execute malicious code and take over the computer), and also IP leaking through HTML stuff.
is that still going on
People will say it's ok, and I agree for the most part. Create a secondary user on your computer ('normal user' for windows) and keep the admin account password-protected. Run the game using the 'normal user'. That's a basic thing you can do for in-game stuff. No one can promise you though security absolutely, a person that really knows about security would tell you. Keep basic security practices outside of game. Don't click on links shared from teammates / steam friends, etc.
alright thank you
As far as I know, that one specific exploit has been patched. However, someone could come up with something similar one day (different exploit that works differently, but same result). I'd stay on official servers only.
It was patched, indeed, but let me give you a short history lesson; same exploit, maybe not exactly same method, did the same thing on malicious community servers back in CS:S days. My point is, I'd not be surprised if it pop ups for a third time one day. Remote code execution (RCE) is some really nasty variety of exploits. Look into it if you're interested.
