Peek means to look, peak means the tip or top.

peek = look quickly, typically in a furtive manner.
peak = apex; highest point.

The truth is that most of people are mixing "pick" with peek. Many times I heard people saying "I will try to "peek someone", instead of "pick someone".

Prefer? There's no preference when it comes to what those words mean.

Unless they are silly, they know that difference. There is a difference. They don't always mean to pick someone, but they are going to peek just in case.
These 3 mentioned here are homophones - same pronounciation but different meanings.

Go pick that awp of mine I lost cuz you didnt throw a flash, and didnt cover me, and I am a noob.

Peek him, he is just behind the corner.

Reached the peak of being silver 1 (or I reached the peak of ranks, being GE).

To foreigners those two might sound very alike. The only recognizable difference to me is the longer 'ee' in the middle with peek.

Dunno, I can easily see people mistaking those two with the other.

LET ME PICK INTO YOUR 420 DRAWER

I WANT TO PEEK SOME GOODIES FOR MYSELF

English is weird though. Native speakers really do take our comfort/ability with it for granted.

Well, you are actually correct here, but am not a native speaker, though I think I am able to differentiate all 3 accordingly from the meaning of the sentence, you Big Pig :p

Anyways, that's why ppl use them wrongfully and the same goes for tons of words, like: should've and should of have both different pronounciation, tho the last one is way incorrect.

Edit: sry, forgot, cant name the brand of my cigs.

"Yes, English can be weird. It can be understood through tough thorough thought, though."

English can be weird.
