GPU works harder on menus than in the game
Has anyone else noticed this issue?
I cap my fps so my gpu/cpu don't get too hot, and when playing the actual game it works great, everything stays cool.

But when I open the loadout or settings menus my GPU starts getting hot, and the fan goes almost to maximum speed.
I wonder if the menu is rendering at unconstrained fps, ignoring the fps_max setting.

Menus have their own limit. fps_max_ui

I tried that and it makes no difference. I even tried setting it really low like 10.
in-game my GPU temp is around 65, but in menus it shoots up to 75 or 80.

Are you also using an AMD GPU?
I read somewhere that currently CS2 doesn't let AMD GPU's set fps_max below 64 for some reason.
So I wonder if they also have a similar limitation on fps_max_ui which is causing this.

yeah it takes about 50% more GPU on some reason. in-game it only uses 25-30%, but in main menu it uses about 50-60%.

i have set limit in nvidia settings, not some console command ... therefore you're wrong.
i have 60fps at all times, unlike you, i actually have FPS displayed on top of game.
its 60 while in menus and 60 while i play, yet in menus my GPU usage is about 50% higher than while playing.

this doesn't even make sense. AMD and nvidia both have settings in control panel to limit every program's max fps, it overwrites game settings .. that's the purpose of those settings.

Menus are heavier, or rather, they better utilize the gpu. This means if you were to limit your gpu power, you would get less fps in menus than in game. You capped your framerate to 60. In game the gpu has to work for less time to produce a frame in 16ms than in menus because again, menus are heavier. To get the same gpu utilization in game and in menus, you would need to cap your menu framerates using the command I posted.

And I do indeed have my framerates showing with mangohud. Uncapped both, 200ish in game and 145 in menus, meaning the menus are about 25% heavier not taking cpu into account.

No. I have a GPU from nvidia but in your topic there was no information about your hardware

Hardware probably doesn't matter then, I was just wondering.
I still think fps_max_ui is getting ignored or something. Because even if I set it to 10 the UI is still smooth, there's no way it's rendering at 10fps.

same here with rtx3050, I have the menu locked at 64 fps (lowest amount available) and I'm still getting 99% usage, while ingame it hovers around 65%
