Should I lock my fps to 144?
I got a 144 hz monitor, should I lock fps to 144? Are there any reason to keep it unlocked?

no.
locking it to 144 will just cause it to drop under 144 more often.
if u have 500 fps, u could fps_max 170.
dont fps_max 144.
vsync is usually bad too, but i cant say anything about it in regards of cs2 yet.
there are arguments that stable fps are good, but that doesnt mean 144 stable, it means dont use 300 if its dropping to 150 anyways. then u can use 150 .

So, I should keep an extra buffer for it to be optimal?

I mean, I don't want to load GPU more than necessary.

yes
Max fps 100 to help monitor the average fps.
It doesn't change anything in game however limiting at a specific number helps u keep an eye on the fps drops and adjust settings accordingly.

Lock it to something like 170-200 if you want to lock it because it might drop under 144 if you lock it to 144. Your monitor will not show you any fps above 144 and fps beyond that will not be noticeable even if it did anything at all.

It might help it might not. Sometimes enabling vsync might help the game be more consistent, but sometimes it might make it worse. Use whichever feels better.

just do a test and check your 1% fps , the input lag , the temperatures etc once you hit optimal spot keep it that way.

I play with my fps locked at 144 fps exactly like the refresh rate of my monitor and performance wise it's crisp and clean

If youre using g sync sure lock it, otherwise I wouldnt

Consider increasing it a bit to avoid repeat frames.

oh man talk about a old thread
but sense it got bumoed ill throw my 2 cents

if you have a freesync/gsync monitor and are struggling to consistently exceed your monitors refresh rate. Cap your fps 4 below the monitors refresh rate via the driver. Do not use the in game fps capping as much like other games it sucks and causes performance issues,

if you can exceed it i reccomend a 300fps cap
should you need more than 300 for those high end monitors 500 if you can manage it.
and keep reflex low latency turned on if you can use it,

do I leave my in game limiter at uncapped and cap the game at 300 using my drivers or ? My game can exceed 144 fps consistently

i cap using the driver and leave the game capped at 1000fps
in game fps 0 to uncap was wonky when i last tried it.
but that was back in the limited test so i have no idea if it got fixed.

Finding a stable value for your fps that does not fluctuate by more than 20 frames or so, as long as it is more than your monitors refresh rate and doesnt dip below it, should keep temps down and reduce stuttering.

There's no reason in running uncapped fps to get 500+fps unless you have a 500Hz monitor. You want the refreshes per second to be as accurate as possible to whatever current frame is being displayed.

If you force your pc to run too many frames, it will drop frames that it cannot render in time, and you may experience stuttering or having a hard time actually discerning what is actually happening in certain situations where the fps value tanks. If your monitors refresh rate doesn't exceed the fps value, you will just have slightly inaccurate frames every so often. It won't be very noticeable but it can cause some unwanted gameplay results

Personally I would undervolt the gpu and just keep the fps limit so that the temperatures stay at lower values, which increases the lifespan of the card.
